Seaward investment in university talent drives innovation


A


Investment in academic engineering excellence is helping to drive new product development at a leading electrical test and measurement company. Seaward has linked up with Durham University’s engineering department in a partnership that sees undergraduate students as part of a project team to develop new processing technology, which could eventually be incorporated in future designs of the firm’s electronic test and measurement instruments. Seaward’s ongoing commitment to boosting engineering skills and new product development to drive growth and expansion.


With an office also in Tampa, Florida, Seaward currently employs around 170 people and is a market leading manufacturer of electronic test and measurement instruments used in a wide variety of electrical, medical, industrial and energy sector applications.


The move has seen Durham Uni- versity final year Mechanical and Electronics (Meng) students Haydn


Lisk and Sam Sutcliffe working in the engineering department on a project that has led to the development of a new proof-of-concept platform that is currently being assessed by Seaward for its commercial and manufactur- ing viability.


Nick Maltby, Seaward’s engineer- ing manager, said the partnership with Durham University is a key part of securing the company’s current and future workforce needs. “We have a strategy to grow and increasing our engineering capabil- ities through strong academic links has become a beneficial part of our plans,” Mr Maltby said.


“Co-operation with Durham Uni- versity helps our recruitment and continues to pay dividends in terms of harnessing bright, enthusiastic academic talent across key parts of the business.”


Analog Devices secures embed- ded devices from Edge to Cloud

nalog Devices, Inc. has unveiled the ultra-low power MAXQ1065 cryptographic controller that features its proprietary ChipDNA physically unclonable functionality (PUF) technology, which offers the strongest protection for edge-to-cloud Internet of Things (IoT) nodes, including medical and wearable devices, against invasive security attacks.


The security co-processor provides 30x lower power when compared to similar products and its extended lifetime and operating range make it well-suited for long-term deployments in harsh environments.


Scott Jones, managing director, micros, security and software business unit at Maxim Integrated, which is now part of Analog Devices, said: “With billions of deployed devices and ongoing exponential growth, it’s common knowledge that IoT devices are a favourite hacking target, normally with malicious intent. “The threats to the systems critical to society such as infrastructure, medical and industrial are real and without proper protection they may be compromised. “The MAXQ1065 with ChipDNA technology is designed to address these threats.


National Grid signs £32.2 million contract with Wipro


National Grid is to spend up to £32.2 million with Wipro, which will take on the energy infrastructure company’s data centres and mainframes with a view to introducing a hybrid cloud infrastructure. The global gas and electricity network firm has con- tracted the India IT services company to provide “next generation capabilities in data centres, networks, and to improve the operating model”.

In a statement, National Grid said: “It’s key that National Grid achieve improved service delivery speed, scalability, and flexibility delivered though the optimisation of data centre footprint, automation of operations and the developing and implementing hybrid cloud architectures that meet National Grid’s current needs and can flex to meet our future.” The Wipro contract is divided into four lots. First up


is data centre co-location, which looks for a global approach to regional regulatory compliance and facilities in which to host IT hardware, including network services, maintenance, physical security and cybersecurity.


Next is hardware managed services, which in- cludes data centres and cloud estate, OS, hypervisor and all storage services.
