W

elcome to the September issue of Electrical Engineering magazine. I am delighted to be the new managing editor of this fantastic title and I look forward to meeting you all in due course. This is a challenging time for all businesses in the UK; ongoing uncertainty around materials is still a concern for the whole industry, and I’d like to start my tenure on the magazine by applauding contractors for their resilience and forward planning in dealing with an issue that is clearly impacting their day-to-day business. Contractors are also to be applauded for supporting for apprenticeships in Scotland, with record numbers re- cruited this year.

A survey from Building Engineering Services Association, however, showed that there are very real concerns about the availability of competent people, so it’s essential that the talent of tomorrow is trained now and equipped with the skills to thrive in the electric future that awaits us all.

Throughout the UK, large consumers of energy are coming under scrutiny, due to concerns about their impact on power grids and on the environment.

The paper used in this magazine is obtained from manufacturers who operate within internationally recognised standards. The paper is made from Elementary Chlorine Free (ECF) pulp, which is sourced from sustainable, properly managed forestation.

While UK energy consumption has declined over the last 20 years, driven by a combination of public and private energy awareness and savings initiatives, the UK is still the ninth largest global consumer of energy, with the third-highest per capita consumption rate in Europe (after France and Germany). Confronted by high per capita consumption and ageing infrastructure, the UK is looking to overcome sustaina- bility and reliability challenges in the data centre industry. Electrical Engineering is your magazine and I’d very much like to hear from you. Feel free to drop me an email to: simonkingmedia@live.co.uk.
