ADI and the BMW Group join forces to provide 10Mb ethernet for software-defined vehicles
A
nalog Devices, Inc and the BMW Group have announced an early adoption of E²B, ADI’s 10BASE-T1S Ethernet to the Edge bus technology within the automotive industry. Automotive Ethernet connectivity is a key enabler of new, zonal architectures in automotive design and supports automotive megatrends such as software-defined vehicles.
The BMW Group will be a leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to implement the technology, leveraging ADI’s E²B for their ambient lighting system design in the vehicles of the BMW Group in the future. Since 2018, ADI has been working closely with the BMW Group on a new concept to simplify bringing Ethernet to the Edge. At the same time, the IEEE802.3cg Group was defining a new
MAN aims to maximise £20m sales boost with major investment drive
A
manufacturing collective that thrives on bringing work back to the UK has enjoyed a major sales boost. The Manufacturing Assembly Network (MAN), which consists of six sub-contract manufacturers, an electric motor consultancy and a specialist engineering design agency, has seen a £20 million increase in orders, with several high-profile export contracts secured in the EU, the Middle East, and the Far East.
Customers from across automotive, aerospace, construction, electrification, and renewables have decided to back British innovation and quality and this has led to more than 50 new jobs being created across member companies. These new opportunities are being reinforced by a £4.5m investment drive in new capital equipment, automation, MRP systems and a Precision Tooling Academy to train the toolmakers of the future.
“Despite really difficult trading conditions and high inflationary pressures, UK manufacturing has continued to defy the odds, and this is reflected in

the performance of the Manufacturing Assembly Network,” explained Tony Sartorius, chairman of Alucast, one of the founding members of MAN. “A £20m boost in sales is some achievement and we believe this highlights a change in purchasing attitudes where customers are now looking for more strategic partnerships and suppliers who can add value throughout the entire process. We’re also seeing lots of new opportunities in electrification and light weighting. Mr Sartorius said that one of the biggest challenges the group is having is finding the right people as it plans for more growth in 2024. “We’ve created over 50 jobs in the last 12 months, but still have lots of positions available,” Mr Sartorius said.
10Mbps Ethernet standard called 10BASE-T1S, with ADI and the BMW Group among other companies both actively involved.
Using ADI’s 10BASE-T1S E²B technology to remove microcontrollers and move software from edge nodes to central processing units, the BMW Group enables an all-hardware edge node while reducing software development and qualification tasks. Yasmine King, vice president, Automotive Cabin Experience at ADI, said: “We continue to deeply engage with the BMW Group to understand their next-generation needs and bring further optimised products to aid next-generation architectures, as well as bring continued cooperation on standardisation.”
SELECT skills specialist appointed new SECTT CEO
A
respected industry
professional who has already made a major
contribution to training and skills in Scotland is to take over the running of the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), the approved training scheme for the country’s electrical apprentices. Fiona Harper, who is currently director of employment & skills at SELECT and The Secretary
of the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB), will assume the role of CEO at SECTT on April 1.
She will succeed Anne Galbraith, who is stepping down after more than a decade of overseeing the development of electrical apprentices and adult trainees across Scotland and whose reign has seen record numbers of young electrical learners coming through. Ms Harper has an unequalled track record, including creating SELECT’s industry training strategy and liaising with UK and Scottish politicians and civil servants on trade union and skills and qualifications issues.
She said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been offered this enormous opportunity and I look forward to the challenge of continuing the great work which has been carried out under Anne Galbraith’s confident guidance in recent years.”
