risk and complexity from the construction site, to help save time, and ensure a high-quality, consistent build for a complex system. Alongside its sister companies Armorduct and
Milton, RMS is frequently involved in projects that combine bespoke design and offsite manufacturing at its factories with standardised cable management systems. It is far from a one- size-fits-all solution. Modern projects demand flexibility to meet the challenges of a construction site and being able to flex to meet different needs is an essential requirement from manufacturers.
Benefits of offsite construction More and more projects are realising the benefits of offsite construction, with a survey conducted by the ECA, CIBSE and SELECT a few years ago showing that almost two-thirds (61%) of respondents reported increased productivity. and nearly one in two (47%) reported enhanced safety. More than half (57%) saw improved quality of work and less project downtime (55%). Many respondents (43%) also had a reduction in their carbon footprint, which is an increasingly important factor for many UK businesses. One of the key lessons that RMS has learnt from experience, is that it pays to engage with suppliers at the earliest stages of a project, as they did with LMOB. Contractors understand the needs of the installation, whilst manufacturers can provide the practical design and production expertise to help them achieve their goals. Not every project will require offsite manufacturing. Often a mix and match solution between bespoke more complex systems and standard product that contractors can assemble on site is the best approach.

Even here however, manufacturers like RMS can help to reduce installation time by, for example, cutting cable tray and trunking to length. Exactly how much prefabrication or offsite pre- assembly you need will vary depending on the demands of the job
It’s also worth pointing out that despite every project not being on the same scale as 40 Leadenhall, many still have to adhere to strict timelines, with penalties for late delivery and so will benefit from such solutions, whether they are
complex or simple. The trick is to find a supplier who can flex with your needs to help provide budget and time certainty, whatever the size of your project.
It is great to see co-operation between parties in the construction industry. When it works well, we all contribute to the success of a project. The role of offsite design, construction and prefabrication is a fact of life today. Pick the right supplier and you will reap the benefits.
