rtificial intelligence has quickly become one of the most talked-about technologies across almost every industry, and
electrical engineering is no exception. While much of the public conversation has
centred on whether AI will replace jobs, the reality is far more practical. AI is not about replacing qualified engineers; it is about giving skilled professionals better tools to manage increasingly complex projects, reduce administration and make more informed decisions. Electrical engineering has evolved rapidly. The
growth of renewable energy, EV charging infrastructure, battery storage and smart buildings has created new opportunities but also greater complexity. Engineers are expected to deliver projects faster, meet stricter compliance
processes. Engineers switch between multiple systems, duplicate information and spend valuable time producing documentation, while office teams repeat the same work by checking paperwork, updating records and compiling reports. These inefficiencies are rarely the result of poor engineering; they are the consequence of workflows that have not kept pace with the industry. As project volumes continue to increase, particularly within the renewable energy sector, these inefficiencies begin to affect productivity, profitability and ultimately the customer experience.

Intelligent workflows adapt to different projects,
ensuring engineers have the right information while reducing errors and duplication. AI can also optimise scheduling by matching work to engineer competencies, accreditations, location and availability, improving productivity and reducing unnecessary travel. Perhaps AI’s greatest strength is consistency.
Intelligent workflows can ensure mandatory photographs, certificates, inspections and compliance checks are completed before work is signed off, embedding quality assurance into the delivery process rather than relying on retrospective audits. This not only strengthens compliance but also gives customers, principal contractors and regulators greater confidence that work has been completed to a consistent standard.
