FEATURE TEST & MEASUREMENT

SUBSTATION TEST SYSTEM GIVES MORE VERSATILITY

Thanks to the addition of a new Multiple Timing Test (MTT) feature, an even wider range of substation and relay protection system tests can be conveniently performed with Megger’s multifunction Sverker 900 test set

T

he Sverker 900 now provides the user with functions that cover all

of the major requirements for single- and three-phase testing in distribution substations and it is, therefore, an attractive choice for distribution network operators (DNOs). It is also ideal for testing protection systems in renewable power generation installations and in industrial applications. To make it easy to work with, the

Sverker 900 has an intuitive user interface that is accessed via a large

colour touchscreen - the screen is used to choose among pre-configured virtual test instruments, which means the required test function can be selected quickly and easily. The Sverker 900 also has a powerful internal processor, so for most types of manual and semi-automatic testing, an external computer won’t be needed.

MTT TEST FUNCTION When the new MTT test function is selected, the user can, in a single test, inject multiple currents with different

amplitudes and monitor the tripping time for each current. The user can also set the maximum time for which each of the currents is applied. This allows the user to confirm IDMT tripping characteristics quickly and easily without needing to perform multiple tests. To make the results easy to

inspect and interpret, the instrument displays them in both graphical and tabular formats. The Sverker 900 test sets can also be

used to perform many other tests. They provide three current and four voltage generators, and the extra voltage generator is particularly useful when testing distance protection with synchro-check function. The amplitude, phase angle and

frequency of all current and voltage generators can be adjusted individually, and the current and voltage generators can also be connected in parallel or series to provide single-phase outputs of up to 105A and 900V. This means that, although the test set

is principally designed for testing protection relays, it can also be used for current transformer testing, when it will graphically display the knee point value of the CT.

MANY APPLICATIONS Among the many applications for which the Sverker 900 is well suited are commissioning and maintenance of distribution substations and generator installations; testing electromechanical, static and numerical protection relays; plotting current transformer excitation curves; burden measurement for CTs; polarity/direction measurement; impedance measurement; single- and three-phase injection testing in switchgear; checking SCADA annunciation and measurement values; and performing network measurements.
