TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION ADVERTORIAL

An introduction to SDCL with CEO, Jonathan Maxwell J

onathan Maxwell, CEO of Sustainable Development Capital LLP, or SDCL, answers questions on his company’s work and how it helps companies improve energy efficiency within their operations.

Q. What is SDCL and what do you do? We develop, invest in, own and operate energy efficiency projects that improve the financial, environmental and energy performance of both public and private sector buildings and facilities. We focus on projects that lower costs and risks, deliver smarter energy solutions and better management and control, reduce maintenance costs and clear backlogs.

Q. What are energy efficiency projects? Energy efficiency projects reduce demand or deliver efficient supply of energy on-site. Reducing energy demand may involve LED lighting, heating ventilation and air conditioning, or installing updated building management systems. On- site energy might involve solar power panels installed on rooftops, combined heat and power plants or renewable heat. These measures can improve the efficiency of the energy used from below 40% when taken from the grid and used with inefficient systems, to over 90% when generated onsite with clean and efficient systems. SDCL can invest at any stage in the project lifecycle from conceptual stage during development and construction,

through to long term operational phase. SDCL seeks to partner with leading equipment suppliers and operators to ensure that projects are completed on time and to the highest possible standard and that they consistently deliver high performance over the long-term.

Q. What are the benefits of improving energy efficiency? Energy efficiency projects can help businesses considerably reduce energy usage in their operations, which helps to reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions. 40 per cent of all the world’s energy and carbon use is associated with buildings and, according to the International Energy Agency, 40 per cent of the required reduction to limit global warming to 1.5° centigrade needs to come from energy efficiency measures. The solutions that SDCL offer can reduce energy demand, boost cost savings and provide environmental

improvements for businesses, generating financial benefits through reduced expenditure, greater reliability as well as improvements to productivity and asset values, all in compliance with current and anticipated building regulations.

Q. Tell us about some of the energy efficiency projects SDCL has worked on? SDCL focuses on projects for large end users of energy, including industrial, datacentres, hospitals, retail and commercial users. Examples of the projects we’ve worked on include combined cooling/heating and power plants at Citigroup’s data centre facilities in both London and North America and St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, as well as the installation of over 90,000 LED lamps across hundreds of branches of Santander in the UK. In Ireland we have delivered a full suite of energy efficiency solutions for the Mater Hospital and in Singapore SDCL has delivered energy efficiency and cooling projects at commercial and manufacturing facilities for groups such as Panasonic.

Q. What are the benefits of working with SDCL? Energy efficiency projects often make both financial and operational sense but are difficult to get off the ground. SDCL can offer three main areas of support: Investment - Our solutions require no up-front capital outlay and result in lower operating costs further down the line.

This can help get much needed projects going and delivering results sooner. Expertise – We have worked with the world’s leading suppliers and operators, and have extensive experience providing

demonstrable value for money and high levels of performance. Execution - Our unique experience in deal structuring and project management, together with our network of world class technology and energy services companies, enables us to arrange turnkey solutions with assured outcomes.
