be deployed throughout the city port and its environs by Flotte Hamburg. Te latest vessel’s firefighting capability is complemented by her scope for rescue work and also for tasks such as bridge inspections. Built by Fassmer Werſt, the €16 million
(US$18 million) Branddirektor Westphal provides the Hamburg Fire Department with the means to tackle fire incidents in the uppermost container stow positions of the behemoths now regularly navigating the River Elbe. Te vessel’s monitors can project water to a height of 110m over a distance of 180m, and enable water to be directed at a blaze at a rate of 120,000litres per minute. Tis capability corresponds to about three times the performance of the port’s other boats. Te hull and superstructure are of steel
construction, with marine aluminium used for the wheelhouse. Te regular crew numbers up to four, although up to 32 firefighters can be taken on board in a call-out.

Eight-engine arrangement Te mechanical power vested in the new addition to the port’s fleet is extensive, comprising eight engines. Two Caterpillar C18.2 diesels, each
producing 500kW at 1,800rpm, deliver propulsive power to a pair of Schottel SRP190 rudder propellers, for a speed of 12knots. Two Schottel STT170 bow thrusters, used in conjunction with the main propulsion thrusters, make for a DYNPOS AUTS-compliant dynamic positioning (DP) system.

Te generator outfit consists of three
aggregates, whereby two 563kVA sets are driven by Cat C18 engines and a single 108kVA set uses a Cat C4.4 diesel. The firefighting installation renders
the vessel FiFi1-compliant and features three remote-controlled cannon, each dispatching 2,400m3 (2.4 million litres) per hour over 180m (to a 110m throw height) and three water/foam monitors delivering 600m3 (600,000litres) per hour over 110m (45m throw height), plus a water-fog self-drenching system. The fire pumps are driven by three Cat C32 engines, rated 1,134kW apiece. Tis addition to the Hamburg port service
fleet conforms to Germany’s stringent Blauer Engel eco-label. Contributing to the achievement of this standard is the adoption of diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technologies. Two smaller firefighting boats of about
