Born in Portugal, Øtta’s journey began amidst the mystic beats of Psytrance, where a rave in the forest set the sta- ge for a lifelong love affair with the genre. However, a discerning ear identified a mis- sing element - the pulse of drums and per- cussion. This led to an inspired marriage of Psytrance with groovier rhythms, a decision that would shape the artist’s trajectory.

“Since I delved into mixing and music production, Trance—especially Psytrance—has been a significant influence on me. Perhaps it’s because my initial rave experience was a Psytrance party in the Portuguese forest. That moment forged a deep connection with the genre. However, I couldn’t help but notice that the old-school Psytrance I initially encountered often lacked the driving force of drums and percussion. This led me to fuse it with more groove-oriented music. Over

understanding of music but also propelling me towards a fresh artistic direction and the development of my own distinctive style.”

“All these groove elements are deeply rooted in my experiences and memories. I was born in Portugal, a place heavily influenced by Brazilian music and culture. The linguistic similarities allowed me early exposure to Brazilian culture, whether through television or the music that filled our home.”

“Portugal also boasts a vibrant Psytrance scene, epitomized by the Boom Festival— an event that stands as one of the largest trance festivals in Europe, if not the biggest. Additionally, Portugal’s historical connection with Goa, an old Portuguese colony, fostered a rich exchange of cultures and music.”

A decade in London further broadened Øtta’s musical horizons, infusing elements of UK Garage and Drum and Bass into the artist’s sonic palette.

“During my time in London, which spanned over a decade, I experienced a profound sense of personal growth and maturation. It was in this vibrant city that my passion for drums and a diverse range of music genres, such as Garage and Drum and Bass, blossomed—a big contrast to the musical landscape I was accustomed to in Portugal.”
