CERTIFICATION SYMBOLS recycling & certification symbols, eXPlained
When looking at any packaging and disposables you may have been presented with a myriad of different symbols. The guide below will help you understand the symbols and icons that you may encounter.
EU Ecolabel
Established in 1992, the EU Ecolabel is recognised across the world as a stamp of environmental excellence, and awarded to products and services meeting or exceeding a high environmental standard throughout their life-cycle: from raw material extraction to production, distribution, and end of life disposal.
OK Compost (Industrial)
This symbol certifies that packaging is compostable in industrial composting units (including any inks, additives, etc. that may have been applied to the material) and in accordance with the European EN 13432 and the American ASTM D6400 standards for compatible materials.
OK Compost (Home) As the temperature of a garden compost heap is significantly lower than those at industrial facilities, products labelled with this creditation meet the requirements that enable them to compost in a more difficult, slower-paced process.

Nordic Swan Ecolabel One of the toughest environmental creditations that can be awarded to products and services meeting ambitious requirements. In order to meet the criteria, products need to have excellent resource efficiency, reduced climate impact, a non-toxic circular economy and conservation of biodiversity, with a strong focus on health.
FSC Certified
FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, the tick tree logo identifies packaging or products which contain wood from an environmentally conscious and managed forest. The logo is a trademark and can only be used once the product or item has been certified and approved by the FSC.
Mobius Loop One of the most recognisable recycling symbols, showing that the material is totally recyclable. The percentage figure indicates how much of the product comes from recycled materials.
The Green Dot “The Green Dot” is a trademark logo used by PRO Europe (Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe) to signify that the producer has made a (most commonly financial) contribution towards the recycling of packaging, however it does not mean that the product is recyclable or has been made from a recycled material .
Compostable (Seedling) The compostable seedling is a registered trademark of European Bioplastics. Use of the seedling logo on any material or product would require suitable permissions and licencing from European Bioplastics. This symbol denotes that it’s certified industrially compostable according to the European standard EN 13432.
Widely Recycled, Limited & Non-Recycled Widely recycled logos mean that materials are collected by 75% of the local authorities across the United Kingdom. These symbols can sometimes be included with additional instructions to comply with recycling processes. Limited and non-recycled logos are either collected by less than 20% of local authorities, or not collected at all. A mixture of these symbols are sometimes used when additional sorting is required.
