Did you go to St Mary’s Col lege in Blackburn? If you are. a former student who would like to support current stu-

;V' o ;?J St Mary’s College is turning
90 this year and has teamed up with the education char ity Future First to help recon nect with its former students.
. The vision is that the college should be supported by a thriving, engaged alumni community. St Mary’s College was
founded in 1925 by the Marist Fathers, operating as a Catho lic Grammar School for boys. In 1978 it became a co-edu- cational Sixth Form College. With a rich history of provid ing outstanding education to the catholic community, St Mary’s College has developed into an inclusive educational establishment providing stu dents and staff of all religious beliefs, with exceptional op portunities and direction. Now it is keen to hear from
past students, right from the early daysofthecatholicgram- marschoolforboysthroughto when the college became a co

educational sixth form. Its Principal, Frank Dixon,
said: “The College has a long and illustrious past serving the community of East Lan cashire for over 50 years. “I am delighted that we, as
a College, are signing up with Future First’s scheme. A net work of former students with all their valuable experience will greatly help us broaden current pupils’job horizons and equip them for the world of work. I am also looking for ward in our 90th Anniversary year, to launchingour Alumni, enabling old friends to recon nect and keeping them up to date with new and exciting de
velopments at St Mary’s.” The College is planning
events to celebrate its goyears and wants to make sure that as many former pupils as possi ble stay connecte. Former stu dents can sign up to the link

as the lambing season gets un der way. The organisation, which
represents thousands of farm ers and landowners in the re gion, is urging dog owners to keep their animals either un der strict control or on leads, and to clean up any mess while on walks in the countryside. During lambing season pregnant ewes can abort if
they becomestressed by loose dogs. Sheep fleeing from dogs are also often killed orserious- ly injured by their panicked attempts to escape, causing untold damage to fences and field boundariesin the process. CLA North Director of Pol

used when close to livestock unless being chased by cattle or horses when it is safer to let dogs off the lead.” A sheep worrying survey,
carried out by Farmers Guard ian magazine and the Nation al Sheep Association lastyear, found that dog attacks had ris en by 50% since 2011 to more
than 1,000 in 2013, costing farmers £1.2 million in lost production, repair bills and vets fees. - Mr Chalmers is also re
minding dog owners to clean up their pets’ mess because of a deadly parasite which can be picked up from grass infected by dog faeces. He said: “There may be no obvious symptoms in a dog, but the effects of the parasite Neospora caninum can be devastating in cattle and there is no known treat ment.”
