Examples ofviolent power struggles

continuetoputinnocentlivesin dan ger, most recently and very tragical ly in Pakistan, but also in the Middle East, Ukraine and parts of Africa. It has been tough to contain the spread of Ebola in West Africa. And

atamoreiridividuallevelthere’sbeen a string of cases of sexual abuse by people held in respect in our society. It doesn’t make for a very pretty

pictureofthekindofworldwelivein- and the kind of potential that human

nature has for evil and doing terrible things to others. But this realistic view of how

things are emphasises we are in a world far removed from what God originally intended and for which some radical action is necessary. And

that is what we celebrate at Christ mas.

God, the Creator of all things, saw

the mess and confusion that human kind has made of His good creation,

byleavingHimoutofthepictureand trying to live independently of Him.

His rescue plan involved His ar

rival in the form of a human being like us, leading to His remarkable but short three year ministry and culmi nating in His planned and purposeful sacrificial death on a cross. It was there, even though He had

done no wrong Himself, that He bore

the consequences of all the wrong in the world, so that those who turn to Him might know His forgiveness and

allow Him His rightful place in their lives. Christianity is a faith about a

change of heart. As that hew begin ning with God at the centre takes place, so people and communities change, the Kingdom and rule of God inhuman life is more evident and the world begins to return to what God originally meant life on earth to be. Christians believe that hope for the world to be a better place does not depend on anything other than a re stored relationship with God. And the birth of Jesus Christ

mas.

shows God’s initiative and desire and provisionfor that to be the case. There isnogettingaway from thefact that the solution to the problems in the world is a spiritual one and I am not ashamed to say so. May I wish you all joyful Christ

Bishop Julian Henderson, Lancashire’s Anglican Bishop.

Having faced the pressure to spend at Christmas, how do we cope with theaddedpressureand expectation to be joyful at Christmas?

“Be happy, it’s Christmas” people say, but it can be difficult for some, espe

cially for those with heavy hearts. Is there a way to face the de

mands and expectations when dark thoughts rise up and an unfriendly world doesn’t seem to care? Where can I find courage to make it through the holiday and all the festivities? Self-pity may bring temporary re

lief but there is a better way. At the very heart of the Christmas story is a God who knows all our difficulties and problems. He faced scandal and gossip

around the birth of the infant Jesus. He identified with asylum seekers in his hasty move to Egypt. Itappears that his father, Joseph,

died while Jesuswasstillyoung. Lat- • er on at Calvary, God in Jesus would take upon himself the heaped up sor-

rowsofthewholehumanrace. Here is someone who has risen above self-

pity and will not condemn our self- pity.

God has measured our frailty and

understandshowwefeel. Healsoof- fers us the resources to cope. His gift of grace may be the best present we know this Christmas. It means swallowing our pride,

acknowledging our need and asking for his help. Draw close to him this Christmas and let him deal with any' ‘‘ darkness andheavy heartedness. Be open to his loving help. Cast all your cafes on him, for he

cares foryou. The Rt Rev. Geoff Pearson, the Bishop of Lancaster.
