Hugh Cornwell, formerly of the Stranglers. Graharri will lead his band in a two-day
MUSICIAN Graham Windle and his wife Pam are aiming to rock Crete with money raising concerts to help the new poor. The couple, both in their late 50s, upped
sticks and nioved two years ago from Dunsop Brirjge to a little village near the resort of Sitia, in the east of the Greek island, to start a new life in the sun as full time writers. But the Eurozone crisis, which has hit Greece harder than most countries, prompted them take action with their own version of Live Aid, and the project has taken over their lives.
Under the banner Bands Against Poverty,
the couple and their fellow volunteersj^re organising concerts with cheap admission fees - about three Euros - to help local charities for people who have ended up in
the poverty trap through no fault of their own. Graham is lead guitarist and singer with
his group G B Blues Band Crete. The band played to 40,000 people at
Crete's huge Matala beach festival lart year to support good causes against drugs and poverty, and are doing so again in june this year, when the star line-up will include
festival at Sitia. on March 22nd and 23rd, joining an eclectic mix of bands and soloists who will play for free, using loaned sound tystems, in a theatre provided free by the local council. The sound technicians and photographers are also helping out without payment. Local radio and newspapers are backing
the event, and money raised wilj go to an existing charity organisation, Sitia's
- .
Municipal Social Supermarket, the equivalent of the food banks springing up |n Britain today. The campaign's slogan is 'together we can make a difference." "We are hoping that we can get other
groups in other towns to do the same so that it will take off throughout Greece," said Graham,
"So fer we've been getting some very
positive vibes about the idea." Parfi added:"The people of Greece are wonderful, butthe/ve been getting a bad
press in other parts of Europe and accused of being laty. "They're actually very hard working,
veiy kind and patient, and welcoming of foreigners like ourselves, but they are struggling at this time and need help. We hope we can help to raise awareness of •
what's happening here." Pam said the Euro crisis had badly hit
tourism on Crete. "You can go to the beach and there are only 30 or so people there, where it used to be crowded.
"It's such a shame. Greece really is a
fantastic place to live in and visit, especially Crete."
Pam and Graham, who have been
married for more than 30 years, bought their holiday home in Crete eight years ago, loved the place and Its people, and • decided to move there permanently. Back in
Britain.they have two sons;
Graeme, a teacher, and Paul, an assistant TV producer.
Pam, originaliy from Clitheroe and
Whalley, studied criminology at Lancaster University and obtained a PGCE from UCLan, hoping to lecture in criminology in Crete and write a case study book on the subject.
Graham, originally from Blackburn, is continuing his former job as a screen writer.
But Pam says: "At the moment our main priority is getting some much- needed
funds for the poor." The campaign's website in progress is ^
