Kirsty’s cool brings festival to a fitting conclusion
TO succeed in the music industry these days, you need more than just raw talent, writes M a t t Evans.
The parlous state.of record sales and
the effect the recession is having on live audiences are factors strangling the emergence of so much musical worth. Artists need to express themselves in
other ways to get noticed. And it is this need to be especially innovative that plays into the hands of the supremely talented Kirsty Almeida, who brings the curtain down on the 2012 Ribble Valley jazz Festival on Monday, May 7th (2-30 p.m. doors, 3 p.m. stage).. This Manchester-based musician and
all-round creative artist is receiving plaudits aplenty. Her star is rising. Not only for the music she is creating, but also for the world she is creating

of secret gigs and moonlit balls; she makes handmade CD covers for limited edition copies of her music, she paifits her own album artwork and designs her own elaborate stage costumes. ;

latest single "Cool Down Rewind", produced by Youth (U2, Primal Scream,
■ The Verve, Beth Orton), it is a question of when, not if, she gets the call to perform on jools Holland. Kirsty cites Eckhart Tolies' 'The Power
of Now" as the main inspiration for her writing the track. She says: "With
20T 2 being such an apocolyptastic year, 'Cool Down Rewind' is a reminder to myself, to
7makesure 7 that I give each passing moment my
full attention, to slow things down in this hectic vvorld and to sometimes just watch the simple
beauty of life unfold around me." It's this pause for thought
that seems fitting when Kirsty tells of her anticipation at performing at The Grand, and for the festival, for the very
first time. Kirsty atJds: "I always go walking in the

Ribble Valley every year on my birthday because it's so beautiful and I am really excited to playing at The Grand as part of this year's festival. It'll be a magical gig." Such magic will be all the more special in the intimarty of The Grand. After no
fewer than 31 gigs and shows over a four-day period, Kirsty Almeida and her Troubadours bring the curtain down on this year's festival. The event will be followed by the opportunity to enjoy a late afternoon pizza and salad atThe Grand. The Bank Holiday Monday afternoon has traditionally been the pariy day of the festival, giving
chance for
the organisers, volunteers and
visitors the chance to kick back after a
full weekend's worth of music. A free perfomance from the Giddy
Gringos at The Atrium (noon to 2 p.m.) will certainly things in the mood before
