sis for an M model in the shape of its cracking 135i Coupe. With a twin- turbocharged, direct injection engine good for 306bhp and refreshingly compact dimensions, transforming this into an M car needn’t have taken long. . : BMW hasn’t just turned the wick


up on the 135i and plastered a few carbon bits about the interior though. The new BMW 1 Series M Coupe has at its heart the same in-line six-cylin­ der engine, in this instance tweaked to develop a maximum output of 340bhp and with enough about it to guarantee zero to 60mph in just 4.7 seconds.; Unofficial figures hint that this

solved and purposeful shape, it.might not be pretty but it certainly looks the part. , - There can be few cars launched in recent years that satisfy the enthu­ siast’s tick list quite so completely. Compact dimensions, reasonable weight, explosive power, front engine and rear wheel drive, a proper differ­ ential and realistic jDricing cannot fail to translate into a winning formula. It captures the spirit of the original E30 M3. As well as having the dynamics in


generation E46 BMW M3. Equally ' impressive is the fact that maximum torque of 450Nm is produced from as little as l,500rpm. A button on the steering wheel switches the car into M ■ Dynamic Mode (MDM), sharpening throttle response instantly when you

the 1 Series M Coupe is a one-model range, with prices starting and ending at £39,990. Whether you view this as a very

THE Toyota Yaris is one of those cars that has the capacity to sur­ prise you,' especially in range-top- ping T Spirit trim. I f you haven’t driven one for a


while, you may recall the Yaris as a rather unexceptional thing. The latest car is anything but, offering excellent build quality, top drawer efficiency and plenty of equipment at competi­ tive prices. Two petrol engines are offered to


Yaris T Spirit buyers, and both have something to be said for them. Featuring smart VVT-i variable


valve timing, the 69bhp 1.0-litre three- cylinder unit marks the entry level, while those looking for more power will prefer the lOObhp 1.33-litre op­ tion, which uses the more advanced Dual VVT-i configuration and gets Stop & Start technology. The diesel option is a 90bhp 1.4-litre D-4D en­ gine. The 1.0-litre unit takes a rather


tardy 15.7 seconds to get to 60mph, which although adequate for shop­ ping duties struggles out of town. The 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine


feels much stronger during everyday driving and its Stop & Start system saves fuel too. The spring to 60mph takes 11.7 seconds, but that’s still slower than the 1.4-litre D-4D diesel’s 10.7 seconds.

and the diesel are mated to a clever six-speed manual gearbox with a higher than usual sixth gear to boost fuel economy on higher speed runs. Toyota has also paid attention to smoothing out the shift action, reduc­ ing noise and bringing improved feel to the clutch pedal.


The 1.0-litre engine gets a five


speed manual, but the other option is Toyota’s MultiMode robotlsed gear­ box, which is available with the two larger engines. This can be set to allow manual


shifts via the gear lever and steering wheel paddles or to take care of the. cog swapping itself. There’s also a sportier mode, which


produces faster automatic changes. Ride quality on the standard 15in. wheels is very good, Toyota wisely de­ ciding against equipping the T Spirit with a bigger wheel that would have an adverse effect on refinement when negotiating potholes and poor road surfaces. connectivity and a USB port for link­ ing in iPods and other digital music players. The T Spirit also gets climate con­


trolled air conditioning and Toyota is offering some very attractive deals on


car that bowls you over. There are other rivals that offer sassier styling, that are more family-friendly inside and which promise a sportier drive. Yet few supermini rivals serve up such a solid blend of qualities, and as the T Spirit it also offers enough in the way of creature comforts to set it apart from the class norm. The Yaris is a vehicle that manages'
