P W L D P mtk of heavy going MARK Riley made light work of the heavy going in Ciitheroe Golf Clubs Single

Stableford when eight pars on the back nine gave him 38 points and the Division One first prize. Ian Murray took second with a one point margin over Paul Hamer on 36. Tony McGibbon finished like an express train with a birdie four on the 18th for

four points and this promoted him into fourth place after cards. Jonathan Sheasby got off to a cracking start when he birdied the first and the fifth

and 38 points put him top of Division Two. Peter Woods came good on the back nine when he birdied the 11th and thel7th

but finished two points off the winner. Mike Ainsworth was well in contention after a couple of birdies but a nil points on

the penultimate hole proved costly when Richard Walsham won a card play-off for third place with 34 points and pushed Ainsworth into fourth. Sunday’s Three-Man Team Event produced a tight finish and lots of “If only” com

ments when two points separated the first three teams. A total of 79 points with six on the first and the last put the Paul Nightingale, Scott Greaves, Paul Woods’ team into first place. Peter Harrison and Alan Gillespie helped Steve Dean’s team into second place

with a one-point advantage over the Allison/Heys/Kitson trio who had to settle for third.

The Ainsworth family ag'ain figured on the leader board when Gail lost out after

a countback with Susan Gibson for the Division One prize in last week’s Ladies’ Stableford.

Both ladies returned 30 points, one better than Chris Stokes in third and the popu

lar Edith Child in fourth. Catherine Podevyn’s 36 points left her well clear in Division Two but Elaine

Grindrod and Diane Buttle battled on the fill the minor places. Vicky Edmondson produced the talking point in the Cluhouse vyith her two on the par four fourth and Kath Townley had the only other two on the fifth.

Past Captains’ Trophy finally beats weather

BACK on the Mytton Fold course, Saturday saw the third playing of the Past Cap tains’ Memorial Trophy, both previous attempts ha-ving to be abandoned due to dangerous weather conditions. Following several days of rain, the competition was played over just 16 holes. Ian Hoperaft, with 36 points, was the first person to have his name on the trophy. Frank Tunstall came in second just two points behind, while club captain John Berry

came in third a further point in arrears, beating Glynn Watson on a card play-off. There were four twos on the day, with Keith Gill birdying the first, John Berry and John Parkinson the ninth and. Glynn Watson the final hole.

'

The club held the final of the season-long mid-week social on Sunday. Again played over 16 holes, Patrick Ashworth shot an excellent 36 points to take

the title. In the ladies’ section, Pauline White will represent Mytton Fold in the" 2012

EWGA Medal competition, having won the dub qualifying event and Allison Nuttall and Judith Kay will represent the club in the Daily Mail national competition in the Spring.

Fanlaslic scoring in Traas Scramble

THIS week saw members of Whalley Golf Club compete in the Four-Man Texas IScramble.

. ' '

The conditions were surprisingly good for a mid-October competition and they certainly improved throughout the day.

. ■ :

[■ It was no surprise then that their were some fantastic scores made by many of the teams and the difference between the only fractions of strokes.

! The worthy winners on the day with a magnificent knock of 62-3.1-58.9 were Paul iWray, Andy Wray, Robert Hilton, and Daniel Jones. i In second and only narrowly missing out by 0.2 were the talented team of Andy Passmore, John Kearsley, S Andrews, and Donald Blanch 65-5.9-59.1.: ■ i Third went to Dave Wetton, Trevor Thomber, Colin Elliot, and James Kennerley with a'solid knock of 63-3.3-59.7.
