A FACILITY for “waste recycling, sorting and transfer” could be built on Clitheroe’s Salthill Industrial Estate. It is one of 14 sites identified
as suitable for “smaller built facilities” in a new county wide consultation on waste and mineral sites. The 14 sites are described
as “all existing industrial . estates or land with a history of industrial activities”. C o n su lta t io n is now
under way on “The Joint Lancashire Mineral and Waste Development Plan Document”, which maps the sites - including some already in use - that could be used for the future treatment and storage of waste, or for mineral extraction. An online system is designed
to make it easier to comment on the 90-page document. Those comments will be considered by the Government’s planning inspector, who will decide whether to give the planning document the green light. L a n c a sh ir e C o u n ty
Councillor Michael Green, C a b in e t m em b e r fo r Environment and Planning, said: “Local authorities have a responsibility to plan for treating waste produced by residents and industry, and for considering the needs of industry in extracting minerals from the ground. “This document sets out the
sites which could be used in future and the policies that will be used to decide any planning applications. “Some of these sites are
already in use and would need further planning applications to be granted to extend their life. Other sites are considered those most suitable for future development. But Coun. Green stressed:
“It’s important to recognise that this document details sites which could be developed - any detailed proposals would still need to go through the full planning process, including further consultation with residents, before being agreed. This document simply establishes the basis on which those future planning
