WEDDING DAY: Tom and Elizabeth Hillman on their wedding day 60 years ago.(s)
f e m l i p By Marcia Morris ;
A PASSION for ballroom dancing brought a young couple together when they met in Accrington Gon- servative Glub on New Year’s Eve to dance to the music of Eddie McGariy’s big band more than 60 years ago.
. Their love has not decreased and the couple, Tom and Elizabeth Hillman, are celebrating their diamond wedding
: anniversary today with a family party. ■. Elizabeth, from Accrington, was a school teacher at several schools before her last appointment, at a large com prehensive in Feniscowles. She taught
business studies to 15 and 16-year-olds, and she also taught night classes at sev eral local colleges. Tom, from Oswaldtwistle, owned
a building contractors business, and worked on many large developments, including schools for Lancashire Coun ty Council. . They were “courting” for 15 months
before getting engaged, and after near ly a year the chance of buying a house
came along, so they decided to get married and arranged the ceremony for December 23rd, 1950, in St Mary’s Church, Oswaldwistle. ; They spent the next 40 years living in
the town before moving to -Woodlands Park, Whalley, where they have spent
the past 20 happy years. During their - married life they have travelled exten-:
. sively, visiting many faraway, places, including Canada,'Russia and Egypt,:: as well as lots o f European countries. - They, especially like the South of France. They also enjoy the countryside in and around the Ribble Valley and have
■ enjoyed many hours walking and ex- . ploring the area. They also like going to the theatre and often went to shows and concerts at Burnley Mechanics and they have fond memories of Clitheroe’s . Grand Cinema. • In the summer Elizabeth enjoys
gardening while Tom enjoys watching cricket and in the past they have visited many grounds in Lancashire and York shire, including Whalley, watching the game.
- - Despite the icy weather on the day
they married, the couple have spent some wonderful times together a n d . they are particularly proud of their, close-knit family. , They have a son, Ian, a daughter,
-Tricia, four grandchildren, Luke, Anna, Julia and Elliot, and two great grandchildren, Megan and Alecia, and they are delighted to spend lots of time with them all.
, : When pressed the couple said the
secret of a happy marriage was consid eration for each other and generosity and this has certainly paid dividends for a long and happy marriage.
Fundraising adds sparkle to party
.- SLAIDBURN couple Brian and Marie Walker wanted a very special
; celebration for the occasion of their i diamond wedding anniversary and : family and friends made their day, with a party at Slaidburn Village Hall. Also in attendance were Ribble
Valley MP, Mr Nigel Evans, who helped with the fundraising effort for the couple’s chosen;charity, : Help for Heroes. . M a r ie; and Brian were very
■ touched by the kind donations re ceived on the day. -They said: “We would like to
thanks all our family and friends • who celebrated with us, but special thanks go to our grandson Stephen, Cowking, who volunteered to have
• his head shaved for the charity. . - -.‘.‘We would also like to thank our
: granddaughters Laura, Victoria and Nicola for baking cakes and biscuits for the party. In total, we raised a ■ ' fantastic total of £476.”
