Sgisa Celtica bring their storming festival show to The Grand stage
. world over. Salsa Celtica have risen to F
become one of the most exciting bands on the planet. The 11-piece ensemble - boasting an
international cast of musicians - visit The Grand on Wednesday, April 21st, on the eve of the release of their new live album, El Vivo En El Norte (Life in the
North), as part of a 15-date tour of the UK.
Now an 11-piece outfit. Salsa Celtica’s
remarkable success story began in 1995 where they were an immediate hit with the locals and the newly- arrived Hispanic community. After recording their debut album
'Monstruos y Demonios' (Monsters and Demons), Salsa Celtica took their music around the village halls of Scotland, from Skye to Mull, Iona to Barra, Lewis to Orkney, and everywhere in between.
With the songwriting talents of Toby
Shippey and a talented arsenal of traditional musicians at the band's
rom ROM humble origins in the bars and clubs of Edinburgh and Glasgow, to festival stages the
o r in in c in fh a
core, the band took off to Cuba to hang out with some of the island’s superb salsa groups and soak up the Afro-
t .....................
Cuban sounds of Havana and Santiago de Cuba. It was there the original members of
the band met Son14 and Sonora La Calle and joined their invitation to play
at a few of Cuba's musical/religious 'bembe' gatherings. After acquiring new tastes and skills
they returned to Scotland to sign to Scottish label Greentrax, releasing two
albums. The Great Scottish Latin Adventure and El Agua De La Vida.
SELL-OUT Following on from a sensational
breakthrough in 2003 when El Agua De La Vida reached number five on the World Music Chart of Europe 2004
saw the band take their thrilling fusion of Latin and Celtic sounds on tour in
the UK for the first time. The 19-date tour highlight included a
sell-out headline performance at the
UK's premier World Music venue Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South-Bank as part of the La Linea
Festival, which saw the entire audience on its feet throughout the show and much dancing in the aisles. Salsa Celtica released their fourth
studio album, El Camino, in 2005 on their own Discos Leon label, and since they have gone on to achieve wide acclaim on festival stages across the world. Headline appearances have included
the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, WOMAD World Music Festival and last year's Big Whistle weekend. The band achieve 'exactly what it
says on the tin', a great Scottish salsa band that manages to combine the Cuban charanga sound of flute and (iddles with a Highland blend of flute fiddles and bagpipes. One style flows naturally into another and there is a fizzing instrumental musicianship. Live, they are a storm. ■ Salsa Celtica appear at The Grand
on. Wednesday, April 21st, doors 7.15pm. Advance tickets available at The Grand box office. They can also be ordered via either

o r rock n roll fans, The Grand’s spring season is the most action packed and ambitious period to date, with a couple of forthcoming Saturday night dates of particular
note. ■ From The Jam is a band more synonymous with large arenas than sleepy backwaters but the Clitheroe venue, in association with the Rock Artist Management music agency based in the town, welcomes this jaw dropping live music spectacle on Saturday, April 17th. Bruce Foxton is part of the English Rock and
Roll establishment. Along with drummer Rick Buckler, he was the
driving force and power behind the singer, guitarist and songwriter Paul Weller. The mod legends had huge chart success
with 18 singles and seven albums between 1977 and 1982. Their fearsome legacy has informed the music of an entire generation. Original bass player and vocalist Foxton is
joined by drummer Mark Brezezicki, of Big Country fame, and fellow singer / guitarist Russ Hastings.
Illuminating The Grand stage a week earlier,
on Saturday, April 10th, is an explosion of a show from Limehouse Lizzy, the band that continues to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and Dominating stages worldwide. Attention to detail, playful audience
