TV pioneer and ex-editor dies
ONE of Clitheroe’s famous sons and a British television pioneer has died. Legendary founder of BBC
TV’s “Grandstand” and inventor of a new phrase in the English language - . “action replay’’ - Mr Bryan Cowgill died on Monday aged 81.
A former Ciitheroe Adver
tiser and Times editor, his career went on to include a long list’of achievements and landmarks in television histo ry. • Among them were three
BAFTA awards for his out standing outside broadcast on . the 1966 World Cup and two Olympic games. The father-of-two joined
the BBC in 1955 as a produc tion assistant and quickly worked his way up the career ladder. By the age of 35 he was Head of Sport, responsi ble for popular and long-run ning television programmes such as “Match of the Day” and “Sportsnight”. He reached the peak of his
career in the mid ‘70s when he became controller of BBCl. In 1977 Mr Cowgill was
promoted to the newly-creat ed job of Director of news and current affairs, with a seat on the BBC’s board of manage
ment and a mission to add analytical depth to news cov erage. But before he could take up th e post, Thames Television offered him the job of managing director. In 1984 he was made a fel
low of the Royal Television Society for his outstanding contribution to television. Throughout his fascinating
career, his worked with hun dreds of TV stare, dined with the Queen and produced many popular drama series. On retirement, he and his
wife, Jenny, initially lived in Bolton-By-Bowland before moving back to the south. • See next week’s Ciitheroe
Advertiser and Times for a full obituary.
Brownies’ super sleepover
A GIANT sleepover was enjoyed by 42 Brownies in Trinity Church Hall. ■ The 2nd Ciitheroe (Parish Church) Brownies joined up with the 3rd Ciitheroe (Trinity) Brownies to take part in a national world record breaking sleepover on behalf of Save the Children , Fund and in association with the Guiness Book of Records. Eight Brownie leaders
supervised the party, who enjoyed a late-night bingo session, circus activities.
singing and parachute games. Following supper the
Brownies arranged their sleeping bags on the floor before the national lights out at 10-30 p.m. Carol Dinsdale, Brown
Owl of the 2nd Ciitheroe Brownies, said: “All the Brownies enjoyed the expe rience and are already try- . ing to persuade their leaders to do it again next year.” She added: “Some sleep-
was had by everyone before breakfast time!”
