CHILDREN will have the chance to try their hand at activities ranging from indoor climbing to arts and crafts during a fun-packed summer playscheme hosted by Roefield Leisure. Kicking off on Monday,

THE House of Commons can some times get it right, and of course it can also get it wrong. Recently it got it oh so wrong! I was so disappointed at the debate

and the result of the vote on MPs’ expenses. MPs have been on the receiv ing end of vilification and ridicule for many months after the inquiry into the use of expenses by some MPs in relation to their relatives. There was further vil ification when the John Lewis list was revealed. (Most MPs did not know of its existence until the freedom of infor mation inquiry into MPs’ expenses) I voted to make everything far more

transparent. I voted for a rigorous OUTSIDE audit of MPs’ expenses, and the abolition of the John Lewis list. A system which had grown up over a period of 30 years whereby MPs masked their lower-than-would-be salaries with higher-than-normal expenses had finally fallen foul of public opinion. It was time to put the whole rotten system to the death. Sadly some other MPs had another

team games including foot ball and badminton. Other highlights will include special visits and outdoor activities. Open to children aged -

between eight and 13, the playscheme operates between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. A before and after care

service is also available with extended childcare for work ing parents from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. for an extra £5 per day. For further details call

Roefield’s reception on 01200 .442188.

0A “HIKE for Humanity” is taking place in the Ribble Valley in September. The six-mile walk, organised by the

Blue Ribbon Committee, will take place on September 14th from West Bradford Village Hall. All proceeds from the sponsored event

will be donated (0 live Ethiopia Cold Chain Project for Unicef. This project aims to help deliver simple but potentially life saving vaccinations to some of the poorest children in the world. Full details and reg istration forms can be downloaded from ^ www.bluerihbonfundraising.org.

COLLEAGUES at Clitheroe’s Sains- bury’s store have been busy fund-raising for their chosen charity for 2008, the North East Lancashire Dyslexia Associ ation (NELDA). Pictured above is Christina Hill, from

Dunsop Bridge, who raised around £400 through a sponsored walk.,

. • After a bright and sunny start the

weather soon turned nasty, but deter mined Christina kept going and com-

. pleted the full 15 miles. ' Back at the Clitheroe store, her col

leagues’ first challenge is to raise £1,500 for a new touch screen computer for

idea. They argued that the system of outside audit would cost a fortune and therefore it should be done in house, and that the funding system should remain the same. They had not moved on one jot. No doubt the system of outside audit

would have cost more, but the more rig orous and independent audit is what

the public now requires. It may well be that the new system was more costly, but it would stop any abuses from hap pening, and therefore would be worth the money. A system of spending up to tens of

thousands of pounds potentially each year on items to fill the house is simply not acceptable - even with receipts. It just has to be replaced with a more transparent and acceptable system.. Part of the problem is that MPs have

voted for their own pay increases. This has now ended. No other profession votes for their own pay and I’m glad that has now been stopped. It is far bet ter that an independent body looks at it without political interference and it is then reported to Parliament. (Just as should have happened recently with the police and nurses, but political interfer ence did them a great disservice). I hope that MPs who voted for the

current rotten expenses system will think again in light of the awful head lines in the newspapers last week. I am encouraging my own side to bring the expenses issue before Parliament again - and quickly. The same three-line whip which the Government followed for rejecting the recommended MPs’ pay hike should be held firm to abolish the John Lewis list. Its time has come and gone, but soine MPs clearly have not read its obituary. Let’s vote again, and bury it for good.

Thumbs up to fund success

the wider public a large banner has been put on the wall of the Sainsbury’s store, facing the car park, and there will also be announcements and fund-raising updates in the store.
