A REUNION to celebrate the friendships developed on a unique local housing estate is being organised by
some of its former residents. Douglas Brownngg was just
14 years old when he moved with his family to Billington Gardens, a housing estate built only three years after the Sec ond World War. “We moved from a two-up,
two-down, terrace house with an outside loo to the new devel opment. “That house had three bed

rooms, kitchen, dining room, lounge, bathroom, two toilets and an internal coal bunker, all for a rent of only £1.20 per
week! I t was like moving into a palace,” Mr Brownngg remi nisced. Erected on land bought by
Blackburn Council for jus t £1,250, the estate had 83 hous es, which were sold for between £1,350 to £1,650 each. Moving into number 80, Mr
Brownngg enjoyed almost a decade at Billmgton Gardens collecting special memories th a t he still holds precious today. He explained: “The 83 fami
lies who moved into these hous es still had the camaraderie built up over the war years. “Even today those ties are
still strong for many of us, so much so, that a few of us are trying to arrange a reunion of the 1950s’ residents at a local venue, which will take place
some time in March or April this year.” Many former residents of
Billmgton Gardens moved to the development from the sur rounding towns and villages. Many are now believed to
live in Blackburn and Wilp- shire as well as the Ribble Val ley.
