DAIRY farmers are invited ;o a summer open day at janeside F a rm in vVaddington organised by :he Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers and >Iational Milk Records. During the event, which
vill be held on Wednesday, nsitors to Ia n and Sally Vlacalpine’s farm will have ;he chance to walk their iward-winning 195 cow jedigree Ribblesdale Jersey lerd. The herd was among the
>ix finalists for the RABDF STMR Gold Cup 2005 and vas also presented with the liily Hill T ro p h y for the lighest placed Jersey herd. The Ribblesdale herd, vhlch averages 5,900 litres
a t 6.58% butterfat and 4% protein, is a relatively new venture having been estab lished by the Macalpines to replace their Holstein herd when restocking after Foot and Mouth Disease. The open day will also
feature a series of discus sions led by the M a c a lp in e ’s milk buyer, Jim Dickinson, of Longley Farm, who will focus on his requirements as a proces sor.
Meanwhile, consultant
Graeme Surtess will explain how the Macalpines work to meet their business tar gets and Peter Larson, of Dansire, will introduce the benefits of Danish Jersey genetics for profitable milk
production. RABDF’s chief executive, Nick Everington comments; “This open day will offer a trem endous opportunity for all produc ers to find out more about how these very p ractical dairy farmers are succeed ing. “Visitors will also be able
to learn how a finely tuned b alan c e of genetics plus n u tr i t io n combined with sound business and techni c a l management a re an integral part of operating an efficient and profitable herd.” All visitors must register
for a lunch invitation by calling RABDF’s Sophie J e n k in so n on 0845 4582711.
