Poignant tributes to a lovely couple

by Faiza Afzaal

THE close-knit community of Billington is mourning the death of an extremely popular and warm-hearted local couple. Mr David Exton (66) and his wife, Sandra

(63), of Billington, died after their Ford Focus saloon was in a head-on collision with a BMW on the A59 Skipton to Harrogate road, in North Yorkshire. The accident happened about 11 a.m. at

Beamsley Hill, near Bolton Abbey, on Satur day, closing the road for several hours. Emergency crews attended including the

Yorkshire Air Ambulance, but Mr and Mrs Exton were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the BMW, Mr Jeffrey Mercer

(75), of Rotherham, was badly injured and later died in hospital. His wife, Jean, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Airedale Gen eral Hospital. The news o f David and Sandra’s tragic

death has shocked and saddened many people in the Kibble Valley. Poignant messages in the form of cards and flowers from family and friends have been flooding in. The couple’s grieving children have this

week spoken of their deep sorrow at the loss of their parents. Speaking to the Clitheroe Advertiser and

Times, their daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Mashiter said: “They were loving, caring and very family-oriented. They loved spending time with their four grandchildren. They lived for each other and did everything together.

taking part in the weekly quiz night.” Their son, Peter, added: “They were devoted

to each other, their children and their grand children. That is what they lived for. They were much-loved by everyone and will be sadly, sadly missed.” Other friends and neighbours have rallied to

pay tribute. Long-standing neighbour Mrs Mary Jackson said: “We are all shocked. David and Sandra were a lovely, warm-hearted couple. “You always hear about incidents like these

on the news, but when it happens on your own doorstep, it really brings it home to you. They will be terribly missed by everyone who had the pleasure to know them.” Bom in Billington, Sandra attended Whal-

ley Primary School and later Ribblesdale Sec ondary Modem in Clitheroe. David was- bom in the village of Dinckley, and was educated at St Leonard’s Primary School, Langho, and Ribblesdale Secondary Modern. The couple were married in 1962 at St

Leonard’s Church, in Langho. They spent the first few years of their married life in Great Harwood before moving to Billington, where they lived for almost 40 years. David worked as a HGV driver at Castle

Cement for more than 25 years before taking early retirement due to ill-health in 1999. A funeral service will take place at Pleasing-

ton Crematorium tomorrow at 2-30 p.m. The family has asked for any donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the North West Air Ambulance, c /o Mrs V. Leech; Carter Fold Cottage, West Bradford Road, Waddington. The couple are survived by their children, Peter and Elizabeth, their son and daughter- in-law Glenn and Joanne, grandchildren, Kelly, Eliot, Gemma and Thomas, Sandra’s parents, Edith and Harry Baron and brother, Nick, and David’s brothers, John and Michael, and sister, Margaret. Police investigations are continuing into the

circumstances surrounding the crash and offi cers are anxious to speak to witnesses. Call PC 180 Andy Bell on 01423 539726 with informa tion.

Expansion plans in firm buy-out

A BUSINESSMAN, whose company Latium Holdings, is set to take over conservatory giant Ultraframe, says the move would be “ very positive for the people of Clitheroe” . Accountant Stuart Lees,

pictured below, who together with Sale Sharks rugby team owner and double glazing millionaire Brian Kennedy, right, is in the process of buying the company, commented: “We’ve no intention of closing or selling off the Clitheroe site.” He added that they did

in fact plan to expand it. News of a possible buy

out emerged at close of trading, after the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times went to press, last Wednes day. On Friday morning the

Clitheroe company issued a statement to say that its board o f directors had

unanimously recomihend- ed the offer by Latium Holdings, which values the company at £29.2m. Shareholders must now

decide whether or not they want the firm to be sold in the coming weeks. They are being recommended to accept a cash o f fe r by Latium Holdings Ltd of 30p per share, plus an enti tlement to a litigation note. If the deal goes through.

Ultraframe’s PLC direc tors including founder John Lancaster, who still owns just over 34 % of the shares (including his chari ty holding) and is said to be backing the bid, chair man Rod Sellers and group chief executive David Moore, will step down. A former Clitheroe Royal Grammar School
