a n y commentators on car design have observed that retro styling only has a short shelf life.


Once you have raided the corporate heir­


looms, the theory goes, you are then stuck when it comes to making updates and keeping the looks fresh. Jaguar would probably con­ tend with that premise. The latest S-TYPE retains its predecessor’s basic silhouette but tidies up the detailing with some elan. Although it has been with us since 1999 and


has mopped up some respectable sales, the S- TYPE was in need of a mild nip and tuck to keep it from looking an anachronism among some resolutely modern rivals. The underpin­ nings of the S-TYPE got a major overhaul back in 2002 which made it a far more dynam­ ically capable car. Now a raft of tweaks to the exterior styling and the cabin have made the S-TYPE more desirable than ever. View the latest car in isolation and many


will be left scratching their heads wondering where the differences are. Line one up next to its predecessor, however, and the changes become instantly apparent. The front end looks a good deal sleeker, the rather fussy chrome bumper inlays having been ditched in favour of a clean, body-coloured look. Weight distribution is helped by an alu­


minium bonnet that replaces the previous steel item. There is a crisper V-shape to the bonnet too, drawing the eye towards the neater grille. The front bumper is deeper and the air intakes and fog lamps are a little more aggressive. One of the horizontal swage lines on the car’s side has been toned down to emphasise the swooping window line. The interior benefits from a slightly more


contemporary style and improved practicali­ ty. The instrument panel now features round chronograph dials and a pair of LCD message centres. Buyers who want a more dynamic look can even specify the fascia in aluminium. Sales of the S -T Y P E slumped when the

smaller X -T Y PE was introduced, but picked up thereafter with the intoduction of a more affordable entry-level 201 b.h.p. 2.5-litre V6 model. This model continues, as do the 300 b.h.p. and 400 b.h.p. 4.2-Iitre models at the top of the line-up.


What is not up for debate is the fact that it is a better can than ever


The 201 b.h.p. 2.5-litre V6 engine has had a huge fillip on sales and will continue to be a


favourite. Certainly, its performance levels (0- 60 m.p.h. in 8.2 seconds on the way to 142 m.p.h.) mean that buyers do not have to make too many compromises. The 240 b.h.p. 3.0- litre AJ-V6 meanwhile, remains as fuel-effi­ cient as ever: you should be able to achieve over 25 m.p.g. in normal use. The 300 b.h.p. S- T Y P E 4.2 V8 will suit the executive waiter while the supercharged version will let you take the fight to cars like the Audi RS6 and the Mercedes’ E55 AMG. This 400 b.h.p. S- T Y P E R makes 60 from rest in just 5.3 sec­ onds. As before, prices - though hardly cheap -

residual values, so important to buyers in this sector. Once upon a time. Jaguar lagged behind BM W and Mercedes in this respect: now it comprehensively out-points them. Independent figures from EMMOX suggest that a 3.0 V6 S-TYPE will retain 56% of its value after three years/60,000 miles compared with 51% for a BM W 540i or 54% for a Mer­ cedes E430. A 2.7-litre diesel model that is slated to appear in the not too distant future should offer even better figures. Love it or hate it, what is not up for debate

those, however, who feel that ridicu­ lously quick merely represents a good starting point. Next up is the FQ-300 model with over 300 b.h.p. at £29,999. This FQ pack has been developed by Mitsubishi Ralliart Europe and it has massaged the electronics to produce in excess of 300 b.h.p. This endows it with quite astonishing acceleration. If you need even more extreme power, Mitsubishi offers the FQ-330 model while existing FQ-300 owners can upgrade their steed to FQ-330 spec­ ification.

An average fuel economy showing - of 39 m.p.g. is around average for the class although the 172g/km COz emissions fig­ ure is not the car’s standout feature. Low insurance costs are, however, both variants fitted with the 1.6-litre engine falling in to Group 5.

drivers looking for something with five doors but with a dash of panache. Mazda’s designers arc currently in a bit of a purple patch and it has been a while since we have seen a clumsy shape emerge from the com­


pany’s design studios. Think of it as a longer and sleeker looking Audi A3 silhou­ ette and you are not too far off the mark. The chunky C-pillar is probably the most distinctive styling signature and the com­ plexity of the design suggests it would have been very easy to get wrong, but the little Mazda pulls it off nicely. The bold V- shaped front grille speaks the latest Mazda design language although there are hints of other designs in the flanks and rear. The Mazda scores plenty of points in


■ the final totting up due to the fact that it is a great all-rounder. The one caveat I would express is that the 1.6-litre engine is not the pick of the range, that honour being reserved for the 'rDCi diesel units. It is probably not even the best petrol engine you can get either, the 2.0-litre power plant taking that particular plaudit.
