Cold and sunny canal adventure
COLD b u t sunny conditions prevailed for Clitheroe Canoe Club’s first canal trip of 2004. Twenty members, many of
them juniors, embarked on the Sunday trip along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, setting out from Greenberfield Locks, on the edge of Bamoldswick. There was some initial con
s te rn a tio n among th e early arrivals as they discovered part of the canal a t Greenberfield had been drained for dredgingl However, the lack of water did
not perturb group leader Jem Lees. A shor t walk along the towpath, carrying the kayaks and Canadian canoes past the northern-most lock gate, led the group of paddlers to a canal full of water. The group paddled their way

Driver staggered from crash car
A CAR being driven from Waddington towards Clitheroe collided several times with a bridge wall before failing to take a right hand bend and crashing into a gate post. Blackburn magistrates heard that the dri
ver, Dale Graham Counsell, was staggering after climbing out of the passenger side of the
vehicle. And a subsequent breathalyser test showed
he was more than three times the legal drink-
drive limit. Counsell (35), of Netherfield Gardens, Nel
son, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was fined £500 with £55 costs and disqualified from driving for 30 months. Counsell, who gave a reading of 112 micro
grammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath against the legal limit of 35 microgrammes, agreed to be referred to the drink-drive reha bilitation programme which, if completed successfully, will reduce his ban by up to 25%. Mr Dermot Woodhead (defending) said
Counsell was employed by a firm in Leeds as a print demonstrator. “He travels the length and breadth of the
country and his business mileage is between 40,000 and 50,000 miles a year,” said Mr Woodhead. “I t has been made crystal clear to him th a t he will lose his job immediately a period of disqualification is imposed.” He said Counsell had been for a meal with
friends in Waddington. His intention was to leave his car and take a taxi back to Clitheroe where he would spend the night a t a friend’s
house.“During the night there was a disagree; ment and he took the view it would be appro priate for him to leave,” said Mr Woodhead,
