mance is not the forte of cars like the 206CC, the Rover MGF and the Mazda MX-5. While the Mazda and MG both boast a clean
sheet of paper roadster pro file, the 206 suffers the
handicap of having been adapted from the familiar 206 hatchback shape.
The problem with most hatchback-based cabriolets

That is one accusation . Even with the roof up, it

popular 206 acts as a basis before undergoing some
rather serious surgery. Offered at a saving of £1,500 over its slightly
quicker 2.0-litre sibling, the 1.6-litre 206 CC looks to be the pick of the range. In the past, Peugeot has

ward thinking. The 206 CC follows in
this tradition, being the only four-seater hardtop cabriolet available; the

Peugeot has received some welcome attention. One of the complaints regarding the 206 hatchback was that with the upright seating position and distant screen, at standstill it felt about as sporty as your average school-run MPV. The 206 CC redresses
this somewhat by lowering the seating position, mak ing for a sportier feel. The seats themselves are new, with firmer side supports and a more adventurous choice of trims, including
optional leather. The rear seats arc moulded into the back, and while they are attractively styled, leg and head room is not the great-

number of sales with its Astra estate, a sensible if rather staid alternative for
the small family seeking a little extra space. Those with an eye to
practicality may attribute this to the fact that Ford has not exactly been at the leading edge of djesel engine development. Now, however, things
saloon and hatchback guises, so it should be no surprise to find that, in estate form, the story is
little different. The longest wheelbase
in the class (2615mm) means unrivalled load-car
rying capacity (1580 litres) and a space opti mised for shape and
| access. And while the familiar
Focus TDDi estate uses a conventional turbo-diesel power unit, Ford’s latest diesel, the TDCi power plant, is something quite different. A true second-
ixts
generat ion common rail diesel unit. The electronic control ol
are changing. Ford’s Focus
already has the measure of its Astra counterpart in
all aspects of the process - and a completely uniform and predictable pressure m
the rail allows for the far more sophisticated control of combustion, with
resulting benefits in smoothness, performance, economy and emissions. . The 1.8-litre TDCi
engine fitted to the Focus range generates 115 b.h.p., and will be offered in par allel to the more affordable
90 b.h.p .TDDi unit. The advanced electron-
ics give some surprising real world benefits. Natu- rally, the car’s perfor mance is way beyond any thing yet seen in a diesel Focus. The ability to
sprint to 60 m.p.h. in 10.8 seconds is coupled with an average fuel consumption of 51.4 m.p.g., an identical thirst to the 90 b.h.p. . TDDi unit. When the engine detects that hard acceleration is^ required, an “overboost facility is actuated, giving a transient torque increase via the turbo-charger. With 280Nm at 1850
r.p.m., the Focus TDCi estate is about as gutsy in
terms of pure pulling power as a VW Golf V6
4Motion. The figures also show that the Focus estate has
the lowest loading lip in the class. Yet at the same time, there is more height in the cargo area than can be found in any other rival
All of which would be of
little use if the estate com partment were not partic ularly wide. Well it is not by the best class stan dards, but 1156mm ought to be enough. Few small estate customers will regu larly want to carry items more than a metre wide. Let us work this
through logically. The Ford Focus hatchback is the best selling car on sale in the UK. The TDCi engine looks set to knock
the Focus seems to have, the edge over all of its • rivals in terms of usable

electronically-controlled hydraulic motors will go to
work, lowering the win dows, popping up the rear deck before collapsing and
folding the roof in on itself. I t is then swallowed by the
