Rover Freelander, the Korean certainly is not shooting fish in a barrel. What it does have in its armoury is an aggressive
price that will attract some
buyers and repel others. After all, if you are gomg
to appeal to those who wear . all the right labels, you
have got to wear the premi um badges yourself, and the Hyundai one has yet to
macerate that particular
mustard. . Not to worry, it just
means a blindingly good deal for those who take a
more pragmatic view of such matters.
Despitethedownward- ■
pressure on prices in the British market, a plush
. five-door compact 4x4 will relieve you of up to £25,000
if you want V6 power.
' 1 Before you hand over a^ cheque for that amount, perhaps you should have a Chris Tarrant moment,
inform the dealer that you . do not want to give him
that and make your way to a Hyundai franchise. ..

True enough, the 148

S'°The Californian stylists have made a fair fist o f the Santa Fe. Granted, at first glance it looks as if it is been dented by a passing soiil surfer, but get used to

OMETHING strange has been
going on in the medi

getting bigger.- Although we do not spot
it right away, they have
gradually grown to a size. whereby Citroen’s C5 is not

with the predictable jibes about how you drive a C5, but even Sir Clive could never have envisioned that personal transport solu tions would have come this far, so soon and from Cit

- ' ' L r ! "I "-t * ‘ Comfort is this car’s
number one priority. It is not seeking to deliver as sharp a driving experience as you could expect in a . Mondeo or a 406, although, in fact, it is not
that far off. Certainly, the engines
are up to the job. Thcseare borrowed from Peugeot s parts bin and are none the,
worse for that. Most buyers will choose
the 2.0-litre engine, but for those who do plump for the 117 b.h.p. 1.8-litre variants, they will be getting a car .■ that can hit 60 m.p.h. in 10.9 seconds on the way to
112 m.p.h. .

ly quiet and cultured and the modest power only really becomes apparent when accelerating at speed on motorways. Keen drivers will break
out the bargepoles when faced with the prospect of a spell behind the wheel of the Citroen C51.8, but they would be missing out. All it takes is an adjust-
ment of attitude. Just as the car is confident enough not to slavishly ape the established rivals, it is best > to relax and enjoy the C5
for what it is. If you can do this, the
executive car rat race sud- , denly looks a distant unap-, petising place. Executive stress relief has never been sweeter
