Town centre personality is mourned

FRIENDS all over the Rib ble Valley have joined fami ly members in mourning Mrs Greta B la ck lock , a Clitheroe town centre per sonality for over half a cen

tury. Mrs Blacklock, who died

in hospital at the age of 71, went to work at Boots chemists in Clitheroe after leaving Ribblesdale School

when she was 1J. When she was married at

21, she moved to Sheldons chemists in Moor Eane, and was there until retiring some 15 years ago. Mrs Blacklock remained

a well-informed observer of the town scene, and kept in touch with as many of the people she knew during her working life :is possible. She was always happy to quiet ly help sick or elderly friends with shopping and

other tasks. Closely connected with

Clitheroe Parish Church, Mrs Blacklock regularly attended services until

DRIVERS in the Rib ble Valley are being told where police speed cameras are placed, in order to reduce casual

ties. Lancashire Constabu

lary's commitment to reducing road casualties by a further two per cent has seen officers take the unprecedented step of informing motorists where they can be caught speeding in iden tified accident hot-spots. The announcement was

made at a Ribble Valley P o l ice and C om m u nity

Forum, in West Bradford V i l la g e Hal l, by Chief S u p e r in ten d en t John Thompson. He said identifying the

areas will, hopefully, result in drivers taking extra care with their speed and result in fewer accidents. Between April and Sep

tember 1999, there wore 166 accidents involving casual ties. This year the same period has seen a 20 per cent reduction to 132 casu

alties. The Ribble Valley loca

tions which have been ear marked for the special attention are on the A59 Longsight Road between

Myc r scough Hotel and

Petre R ou n d ab ou t , the Whalley/Clitheroe by-pass

between Petre Roundabout and Gutheridge Plantation,

the A666 Whalley Road between Brownhill Drive and Petre Roundabout, the A671 Whalley Road between Dean Bridge and A59 Clitheroe by-pass and the A682 Gisburn Road between the former C.rey- stones Public House and the North Yorkshire bound

ary. Superintendent Dave

Mallab.v. operations manag er with Lancashire Con stabulary, said: "The pur pose of releasing the details of the mobile camera sites is

Teeing off for the hospice

to make the motoring pub lic aware of where these casualty hot-spots are. The fac t that there may be speed cameras at the above locations should act as a speeding deterrent." However, because these

locations have been identi fied does not mean that speeding equipment will not be used at the same time in other areas where short-term problems have

been identified. Current ly the fixed

penalty fine for speeding is £40, but is due to go up to £60 in November. "There are no excuses,

you have been warned," Supt Mallaby added.

Jessica meets her soccer dream team

A LAST-MINUTE dash is nothing when you have the chance to meet your heroes! For with Claret and Blue

blood coursing through her veins, accord ing to dad, seven-year-old Jessica Pow- ley, of Riverside, Low Moor, had a race against time to lead out the Burnley FC team in its away game at Tranmcre Rovers. Just days earlier, Jessica

had written to the club ask ing to be a match day mas co t . Warned by dad Mr David Powley, a primary school teacher in Black burn, not to become too excited anticipating a quick response, he was just as stunned as his daughter when the club rang to say Jessica's let ter had impressed staff so much, they wanted her to fill the Prcnton Park vacancy - one of only two free slots avail able this season. Said Mr Powley: "We had

to dash about co l le c t in g tickets and making arrange ments, but it was well worth it. I've been a Burnley FC supporter for 40 years and watching Jessica run out with the players for their warm-up was just as much a thrill for me as it was for

her.” Jessica, a pupil at Edis-

becoming seriously ill some months ago. A keen sup porter of the Thursday Fel lowship al the church, she used her needlework skills to make two of the Milleni um kneelors. At one time she was in the Bolton-by- ' Bowland Women’s Insti

tute. There was a large congre

gation for Mrs Blacklock's funeral service at the parish church, when the Rev. Canon Philip Dearden paid tribute to her. Interment followed at Clitheroe Cemc-
