VOLUNTEERS from the Ribble Valley who dedicate their spare time to helping elderly people in the community were rewarded for their efforts at a special party. They were thanked by Ribble Valley Age

THERE was a certain amount of disruption to traffic when the Pruden tial Tour of Great Britain cycle race passed through Clithoroe. Those events require thorough plan ning and the aim is to minimise disruption to drivers and residents alike. High drama occurred on Pendle Hill when Chris Boardman, previous National Hill Climb champion and Olympic cyclist, collided with a sheep at speed and was thrown from his cycle and received minor injuries. In true spirit, he carried on, but failed to win stage six of the Pru- tour.
IT would seem that animals and accidents wore to bo tho order of the day over the Bank Holiday week A end. motorist on tho A59 sud denly found himself con fronted by a cow and the

Our main problems, apart from dog accidents, are various animals getting on to the roads. Some times, gates are left open or fences are broken down. Normally, live stock should not be free to roam on the roads, but an exception to this is our moorlands. Here the sheep are permitted to roam at will and drivers in these areas should be aware of their presence and take extra care. Also, while on the subject of animals, being in a rural area we have many horse owners among us and we should always drive with caution when passing rid
vehicle in need of repair and had to be subjected to recovery. Some of you may be wondering what you should do if you have an accident with an ani mal while driving your vehicle. If the animal is a dog, horse, ass, pig, mule, sheep, goat, or cattle then the matter has to be reported to the police.
ers.
WE had a number of road accidents over this peri od, but, fortunately, there were no serious injuries. Accidents with caravans usually leave the caravan a shattered week by the roadside. One couple were very lucky, if some what shocked, to find themselves down the embankment of the A59 after a blowout on one of the caravan tyres. Both their car and the caravan had stayed upright and only minor damage was caused. The main thing was they wore both unin jured and they hoped to be able to continue their holiday.
this option and most of the companies involved
will take occupants and vehicle to the destination
of their choice. This is particularly beneficial if you are on holiday or away from home. The alternative is your vehicle being taken to a local garage at your expense.
THE brief spell of fine weather has brought visi tors to our area, most of them very welcome, some less so. Those criminals who target parked vehi cles have been very active especially in our beauty spots. Cars have been brokeniinto on the Nick o' Pendle, Edisford Road, Hurst Green, Wadding- ton,and Dunsop Bridge.

Help us to defeat these thieves by leaving noth ing of value in your car. It may be inconvenient to carry things with you, but believe me it is far easier than having to can

THE arrival of summer means various events have been staged, some of which have needed police involvement. The Sun day markets are always a popular venue for many people and recently there has been the added attraction for Ribble Val ley visitors with steam trains running once again and hot air ballooning rising in popularity.
One thing that the accident did highlight was the benefit in these circum stances of having some form of recovery agree ment. More and more motorists are taking up
For local residents this can cause car parking prob lems and added conges tion on our roads, normal journeys taking that extra bit of time. While this can be frustrating, we should perhaps be consoled by the fact that we reside in a beautiful part of the country and bo patient with those who merely visit.
are safe at Sainsbury’s as rumours flood the town
FEARS for job losses at Clitheroe's new Sainsbury's store following national press reports of redundan cies and rationalisation are unfound
ed. A spokesman for the supermarket
chain confirmed that its Clitheroe branch had been built and staffed to its new model guidelines and, as such, there would be no need tor the stream lining, which featured in newspaper headlines throughout last week.
The retail giant hit the presses after
announcing its new "change manage ment programme", designed to boost its competitiveness over rivals such as Tesco and Asda. The programme will involve some staff cuts in some of its stores, while other workers Yvill be redeployed. Sainsbury's also denied rumours circu
lating Clitheroe that it is to transform its Moor Lane premises into a Homebase DIY outlet. Said the spokesman: "This is a brand new store and we have no plans to alter anything."
