owing a great deal to the Holy Scriptures, and I long for many more people to read them more fre quently to obtain tlie same kind of inspired ideas from them. The Bible contains the mind of

God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners and tlie happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its pre cepts are binding, its histories are

f o r t f i e w e e k

hat is the source from which I obtain material for these

true and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, practise it to bo

holy. It contains light to direct you. It

is the traveller’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the sol dier’s sword and the Christian’s

character.' Hero, paradise is restored, heav en opened and the gates of hell dis

closed. Christ is its grand subject and

our good its design, with the Glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart and guide

the feet. Read it slowly, frequently,

prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory and a river of pleasure. Try to follow its precepts and it will load you to Calvary, to the empty tomb, to a resurrected life in Christ, yes, to glory itself, for eternity. St Paul regularly used the term

"grace and peace" in addressing those folk to whom he wrote his let ters. They probably understood the full moaning of them, but I think they deserve our further considera

tion. Grace is the undeserved, unmer

ited and loving forgiveness of God, for which we can all be thankful. Peace is not just the absence of

strife; it is the sense of well-being we know when wo realise that our sins are forgiven in love by our Sav iour Jesus, who died on Calvary’s cross for all our sins. Our Lord accomplished this

blessing for each one of us. Many of us experience a deep sense of being unworthy when wo consider all that Jesus did for us and continues to do. It is then we can bo lifted from life’s sinking sands with the blessed assurance of the good news of Jesus. Now, with all that it conveys, may I pass on to each of you Paul’s greeting: "Grace and peace my friends, in the service of Jesus."

THE impressive scenery of the Ribble Valley is to be enjoyed by many thousands of satellite television viewers. "Men and Motors", put out for

several hours every night by Granada Television, has been filming the new Jaguar car

around Stonyliurst College and Hurst Green. Producer Mr Graham Sherring

ton lives in the Ribble Valley and has already used local roads for a motor cycle item, as we reported at

the time. But the programme is designed

to have national and indeed inter national appeal. So filming takes place all over the country for its varied items. Some have a "laddish" aspect, others are jHirely about cai-s, and yet others correlate the

two. Other recent vLsitors to the col

pn

lege have included comedian John nie Casson, who took time out from his Blackpool schedule to appear at the Centenaries Theatre. His per formance was well received and he

liopes to return. Our picture shows tlie Jaguar car

being filmed at the college. I ®

Following in her fa th e r fo o t s t e p s as Aimee’s dance medals flood in

FOLLOWING in her father's footsteps with a talent for dance I is Clitheroe's Aimee Williamson

(pictured). The graceful six-year-old is

already filling the shelves of her West View home with medals and

I trophies just one year after begin- 1 ning ballet, tap and modern dance classes at the town's Angela West-

1 well School of Dance. Her latest acquisition is the Baby

j Ballet Trophy, which the St James’s CE Primary School pupil collected as the prima ballerina in the under-sevens' age group class of a festival held in

Horwich. With her teachers and competition adjudi

cators hinting at a natural born talent, her mother, Mrs Irene Williamson, a local gov ernment administrator for Blackburn with

I Darwen Council, believes the roots of her daughter’s achievements may lie with her

father. Said Mrs Williamson: "We are thrilled

I Williamson, an environmental health inspec- I tor for Burnley Borough Council, along with the couple's other daughter, sports fan and

Aimee is doing so well. I'm not much of a dancer, so any talent Aimee has must come from her father, who is a member of the South- port Sword Dancing Team!" Although different in style, Mr David

j Ribblesdale High School pupil 12-year-old I Katie, are hoping that it will be bouquets all the way for Aimee as she pirouettes to the top.

Makes legal history

ONE of the Ribble Val ley's leading lawyers has made legal history. Mr Andre Rebello

(41) will be the youngest full-time coroner in the

country when he takes over at the City of Liver pool in July. A partner in a Black

burn firm of solicitors, Mr Rebello has been part-time coroner for Blackburn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley

iites L f 1

since 1994. He will have to leave his practice to take up the new post, but plans to continue liv ing in the Ribble Valley with his wife and two

children. A devout Roman

Catholic, Mr Rebollo is a former governor of Oakhill College, Whal ley, and a current gover nor of St Mary’s College, Blackburn, which he attended as a boy. Mr Rebello is a keen

Blackburn Rovers sup porter, and has no plans to change this allegiance.

THE honour of appearing on a national television quiz show was only a little marred for a CRGS team by

the result. The junior version of Channel

Four’s "Fiftoen-to-one" attracts a lot of would-be entrants, but only the best are selected to take part. The quintet of girls from the York Street Lower Sixth Form of CRGS

passed the audition. But they knew they faced a hard

task in view of the strength of compe tition. However, they were sworn to

LlLlUil* XI.GWCVdi v | 1 < n ! -. i J i > \ I — t i r. {r/i AI <

secrecy about the result after going to London for filming nearly two months

ago. The first part of the programme,

shown last week, saw them actually in

the load. However, by half way they were

down the slope and at the end they

were third out of throe. "Wo did well at first, but the indi

vidual rounds caused problems - the winning scliool, from Devizes in Wilt shire, had a brilliant boy who did not put a foot wrong," says Emily Biad-

shaw, one of the team members. The others were Kathryn Booth, Helen Atkins, Jenn Groves and Anastasia

McCreadio. The second placed school was from Hampton, Middlesex. The girls enjoyed their two days in

London at the expense of Channel Four and although they would have preferred to win, found the experience

very worthwhile. The team members are pictured

during the broadcast.

Pay for a day’s help from the

Samaritans FUND-RAISING is a nightmare for all charities. Now the Samaritans seek support for an unusual scheme which is a variant of the "buy a brick" con

cept for buildings. The branch, which takes

calls from the Ribble Valley - and Blackburn and Hjmd- burn, too - costs £40 a day to run and people or organisa tions are invited to "Pay for a day." The gift, just £40 or multiples of that sum, can be used for a specific day which may have a special meaning for the donor. These "remem brance" days can often have a sad aspect, but the Samari tans point out that there is every reason to celebrate an anniversary, recovery from ill ness or other happy event. The Samaritans locally have

ly-lr

110 unpaid volunteers, no paid staff, and an annual cost of £14,000 to meet. Any sponsors can ring 01254 662424.
