LITHEROE Golf Club this week staged the coveted Lancashire Ama teur Championship for the first time

Whalley Road club for the 1998 championship, and head greenkeeper Andrew Geddes and his staff received fulsome praise for presenting the course in absolutely immaculate condition. Denis Greenup, Mike Bailey, Daniel Preedy,

David Heesom, Bob Aitken, Andrew Walms- ley, and Rob Andrew were Clitheroe's represen tatives in the championship. And Greenup emerged the leading local in

aggregate and 34th place. Preedy carded rounds of 75,76,77 and 81 for

a 309 aggregate and 35th spot in the tourna- ment.

The entire field played 18 holes on Friday and Saturday with the top-40 and ties qualify

Aitken, Walmsley and Andrew failed to qualify

for the final day. Denton golfer Paul Williams was crowned

county champion when he defeated title-holder Darren Johnson (St Annes Old Dinks) with an

eagle on the third and final play-off hole. Opening rounds of 72 and 70 enabled Ian

Reay (Bury) to lift the prize on offer for lead ing after 36 holes, but only after a card play-off with Lytham Green Drive's Daniel O'Connell
