make the same mistake. With Nathan Carlton

making his debut at num ber eight and Alan Nuttall moving up to lock, the

pack looked strong. Indeed, i t needed to be

on top form as the Wharfedale pack started at

full steam. However, as time went

by the Clitheroe forwards gradually came into their own to outplay their oppo

sition. In the backs the in-form

Andrew Moorby returned on the left-wing and it was his pace th a t secured Clitheroe’s first try. Moorby was helped on

his way to the line by full back James Broomfield, who was dangerous throughout in open play. Fly-half Declan O’Duffy

PackwoodHaugh0 St Mary’s Hall52

AFTER cruising to a comfortable vic tory over local rivals Malsis in mid week, St Mary's Hall set off to Shrop shire on Saturday full of confidence to play their last 15-a-side game in this

country this season. This has always been one of the

toughest fixtures in recent years, as Packwood are are a renowned rugby playing preparatory school. No-one could have forecast this

incredible result, nor the rugby that the Ribble Valley side served up. From one to 15 the St Mary's Hall

boys put on a dazzling display of top- class rugby, putting into practice all that they have learned over the last few years. There was only one handling error

during the whole of the first half as they raced into an unassailable 38-0 lead. Such was the quality of rugby that

added a magnificent con version moments after he had opened the scoring with an equally impressive

penalty. With half-time app

roaching, some slack tack ling allowed Wharfedale to notch their only points as the dangerous outside cen tre beat three would-be defenders to score in the

corner. With no conversion the

half time lead was cut to five points in favour of the Maroon and Golds. The second period began

week, with the various sides win C don.

ning three out of four. The Ladies’ second team had a con

vincing 5-0 win at Eagley seconds. Lisa Pilkington moved into the

player, which complimented her own game, and she won 3-0, while Mary Brass had a strong 3-0 win.

Nikki Bywater played a stylish ,

number one slot and had a fine 3-1 win, which was matched by Sue Sed-

with Bob Wilkinson replacing Alan Nuttall and Clitheroe on the attack. Mike Chambers and

Dave Barnes put in some good hard graf t, Roger Holmes and Martin Wigley backed up and a rolling maul was set up five yards from the Wharfedale

try line. One final surge to the

left and the referee award ed the sought-after try. That was the final score,

but only due to some dubi ous decisions made by the touch judge. Flanker Barnes was

denied a try following a 30- yard dash. He was harshly

Forwards take credit for two-try victory Locals sign off in style

the Packwood supporters gave St Mary's Hall a standing ovation at half time and the referee asked coach Chris Moxon if he would consider putting on

the substitutes! The centre pairing of skipper Blake

Emery and the strong running Joe Ans- bro cut holes through the home defence, with Ansbro grabbing four tries and

Emery three. However, the try of the match came

from winger Ben Hunt after the ball was moved the length of the field through 10

pairs of hands.

at Easter, this was an amazing way to sign off after a marvellous season. It was a great day for the school, as the

night, and rightly sol adjudged to have put a foot

into touch. The forwards must take

the credit for this win, but some good defensive perfor mances did come from the

backs. In particular Mick Stott

made some excellent cover ing tackles and scrum-half Malcolm Heanan provided good service wherever pos

sible. On Saturday, Clitheroe
