A CLITHEROE football enthusiast is appealing for help in finding the names of his grandfather’s
award-winning soccer team mates. Mr David Burgess, who manages'Clitheroe FC Reserves,
has unearthed this picture of his late grandfather, Mr Pressley Trimby.,

It depicts his days as a top goal scorer with Sabden FC, which hit the high note in 1923 after winning the Aitken
Shield, the “FA Cup” of local football. Mr Burgess has also discovered his grandfather’s cup winner's gold medal.
He would like to frame the medal and picture, but the icing on the cake would be a team line-up, too. If you think you can help, phone him on 01200 443854.
Caring parents go to top of the class
what problems can face parents and teachers these days and, happily, some of the strengths in both groups which bode well for
R
the future. The decision to investigate set
ting up a trust fund to finance a threatened teacher^ post would have been unimaginable
10 years ago. cThe removal of between 40 and 50
hildren from the school over the last
18 months has led to the proposal to lose one of the school’s seven classes. The move is necessary because the drop in pupil numbers inevitably leads to a cut in local authority fund ing. The resignation of eight gover nors has increased the risk of a loss of confidence in the school and a contin
uing decline. The idea of the parent-funded post
dramatically underlines parents' con fidence in the school and its future. Their determination to ensure that the institution and its staff should not be put under further pressure, which might undermine its strength,
is admirable. But should it be necessary7 Would
any of this crisis have happened before the managerial changes of the
last 18 years? It is no secret that teaching has been one of the professions under severe

As I see it
pressure during the Conservative reign. AU the moves to devolve man agerial responsibility for running... schools to head teachers have meant not only different and greater work loads for them, but for their staff as well. The administrative support which used to be supplied by staff at county halls throughout the country has been choked off by decisions made by successive Conservative governments which may have had difficulty in agreeing about a lot of things, but were united in believing that local government was axiomati- cally a bad thing. For year after year teachers’ work
has been criticised and exposed to ever-increasing invigilation. Schools are now stalked by the prospect of an OFSTED report and compelled to malm the most of it when, in the Rib ble VaUey, the report is almost always entirely positive. Marketing and financial management skills, in an increasing straitened financial situa tion, have been added to the tradi tional personnel and teaching skills which head teachers have always been expected to practise and which combine to form that mystery, lead
ership. Now that the country has taken a firm stand against the Conservative position of knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing, perhaps teachers, along with other public servants, can look for an
improvement in their position. Maybe the Government’s plans to
reduce class sizes wiU mean that the WhaUey parents’ efforts will not be . needed. Perhaps Lancashire County CouncU, fueUed with new confidence in its strengthened role under an administration that claims to believe in the importance of local govern ment, wUl find a way out of the pre
sent difficulty. HopefuUy, the Labour Party s state
ment during the election that its pri ority would be “education, education and education” wiU be realised in a way that convinces teachers ana which genuinely helps to rebuild their morale and re-establish their proper place in the community. The men and women we entrust with the care of our children and grandchildren should have our respect and support. The 100 Whalley parents prepared to consider paying for a teacher are showing just how important they
believe he or she is.
Let us hope their financial sacrifice is not necessary because in the next couple of years, if not in the next cou ple of months, those places at Whal ley CE Primary School will be need ed again. Meanwhile, everything pos sible to maintain and build on morale at the school should be done and the parents’ action, whether it turns out to be necessary or not, is a pretty
