Whatley’s recent revival was ended by the Applegarth
side at Station Road as professional Jonathan Harvey and captain Stephen Hipgravc combined to cam their
side a 96-run win. Simon Gorton’s bowling provided a bright spot Tor
Whalley — he took 4-55 from 15 overs, but was let
down by the other bowlers. Whallcy won the toss and put Earby in and profes
sional Jason Smith struck immediately to trap Chris Walton leg before for nought. The prolific Nigel Pickles joined Harvey and those
two set about laying the foundations Tor a big score. Pickles had made 32 by the lime he was stumped by
David Westwood off Gorton. Brother Andrew Pickles made 11, but he was followed by
Steven Rushton, who batted superbly for an unbeaten 42. Harvey raced to 50 olT 64 balls, hitting six fours and one six along the way, but was eventually bowled by
Gorton for 76. At the end of the 45th over Earby were jus t 120-4,
but enjoyed something of a run-blitz in the final 10 to secure a defendable score.
Skipper Hipgrave made ju s t two, but Simon Pickles made 21 before becoming another Gorton victim.. Matthew Wilson (nought) and Nigel Hodge (nought not out) did not contribute, but with Rushton on such
blistering form, they did not need to. The Earby number five punished the Whallcy bowl-,
ing, hitting four fours and three sixes, as he remained unbeaten on a score of 42 which hod taken him just
34 balls to compile. At the end of the 45th over Eorby were 189-7— they
had put on 69 in the last ten overs. Needing to score at a rate of ju s t over four an over,
Whalley never really looked like being the winning side. Hipgrave bowled superbly to take five wickets after
Harvey hod ripped out Whallcy’s opening pair cheaply. Only two Whallcy batsmen made it into double fig
ures with Nick Keighley making 18 and Higginboth am top scoring with on unbeaten 21. Whalley’s prgress was painfully slow as they decided
to forget about winning and set their sights on prevent- ing Earby from claiming the bonus points. After 45 overs Whalley had made ju s t 93-9, scoring

new Cherry Tree club record. Kearsley reached 21, and Smith 11, with Hughes
