The choir o f Downham Parish Church began their

busy carol singing period with the annual carol ser vice on Sunday morning. Readers of the nine les

sons were Mrs Molly Ros- kell, Mr Michael Parkin s o n , M r s K i r s t e e n Walmsley, Mrs Eileen Wilson, Mr David Busby, Mrs Olivia Assheton, Mr N o rm an Lu n d , L o rd Clitheroe and Canon Len Cragg, who also conducted the service. E le v e n w e l l-k n ow n

carols were sung and four items were sung by the choir, accompanied by organist Mrs Adele Plod ding. Christa McFall was welcomed into the choir after her six months pro bation and presented with

•her surplice by choir mis t r e s s M rs K i r s t e e n Walmsley. In the evening the choir

were out once again, carol singing in Twiston. Pro

ceeds from their singing this year are being divided between choir funds and C a n c e r R e s e a r c h in memory of their late choir mistress, Mrs E. Scott.

Service On Sunday a Christingle

service, held at Downham

Parish Church, was con ducted by Canon Len Cragg with visiting organ ist Mr Neil Shepherd and his junior choir. All the children were

given a Christingle orange and everyone enjoyed the lovely singing. The collec tion taken at the service will be donated to the Children’s Society.

Members of Dowham

Church choir were joined by many friends and visi tors for their carol singing round the village on Christmas Eve, culminat ing in the midnight ser vice, with voices rapidly fading.

About £200 was raised

by their efforts and this will be divided between funds for the choir and Cancer Research in memory of Mrs Elizabeth Scott, a lifetime member of the choir and a former choirmistress, who died earlier this year. ■

Choir members were

also on duty on Chiistmas morning. All Christmas services were conducted by Canon Len Cragg and the organist was Mrs Adele Pridding.

from the Ribble Valley Council spent a day at the s ite and took aw ay a

truck-load of rubbish. The sisters have sug

gested a return to refund able glass bottles, bottle banks outside pubs, a spe cial pollution committee and lottery funding for clean-up schemes, in an attempt to combat the pollution. I f the measures fail,

they say people caught throwing rubbish in the brook should be made to clean the whole brook, take the rubbish home and live with it, “ until they learn what it is like to be a duck in Mearley Brook’’ .
