to close the gap on them at the top. Justin Connolly reports...

W Trafford’s home clash with Mossley on

Boxing Day was lost to the weather, but the visit of St Helen’s on Saturday was one of only three First Division games to go ahead. Trafford emerged 1-0 winners from that

game, meaning they now lie just two points behind CUtheroe with two games in

hand. Newcastle can also still catch and over

take the Blues should they win their

games in hand. They too were denied Boxing Day action,

but there was good news for Clitheroe on Saturday when Newcastle could only manage a point at home to Penrith. That leaves them in third place, eight points

behind Clitheroe with five games in hand. This Saturday Clitheroe are once again to

be denied league action as they travel to Mossley for the re-arranged League Cup Second Round tie. Newcastle too face a rearranged cup clash when they travel to Bootle.

, _ But Trafford could take the opportunity

to go top when they visit Glossop North End, a side currently placed 16th in the

fable. Forth placed Blackpool Rovers will be

looking for a win from their visit to strug gling Nantwieh Town. That will give them the same number of

points as Newcastle Town, but they will go third because they have a better goal-

difference. Mid-week action next week also sees both

Newcastle and Trafford with matches. Newcastle play host to Nantwieh, and

should he assured of three points. Trafford face a trickier trip to Vauxhall GM.

IT H Clitheroe out of action both on Boxing Day and Saturday, Newcastle Town and Trafford had the chance

They have only won four games this sea son, but despite sitting in 15th spot they

have only lost six. They have drawn ten of their games so

far, and should prove a difficult side to beat for the men from Shawe View. Tuesday sees Clitheroe once again in cup

action when they visit GM Vauxhall Con ference side Morecambe in the Second Round of the ATS Trophy. CUtheroe were given a bye in the first round. Morecambe should-provide a tough test

for CUtheroe and give them the chance to gauge the progress they have made over the past six months.

■ ' The Conference side He a creditable fifth

in the table, despite losing their Saturday match to third-placed Northwich. They have a slightly easier match this week end before facing CUtheroe —: they play at home to Altrincham, who are currently 11th. In the Reserve Division Clitheroe will

play host to Castleton Gabriels on Satur day and wiU be hoping Trafford slip up at home to Nelson to give them the chance to ‘ close, the gap at the top of the table.

Utheroe have a game in hand over the league leaders, but Trafford now have a 12-point lead, a margin which the

Division will provide CUtheroe fans with some hope for the coming fixtures.^ Leading scorer in the division is John

Scarlett of Nantwieh Town, the side which plays title-rivals Blackpool Rovers and Newcastle Town over the next week. He has scored 24 goals in total this sea son, including 16 in the league and eight in cup competitions. CUtheroe’s own Paul MulUn Ues tenth in the table with 15 goals so far this term. ■
