Water's Edge By Martin James *
WHEN I wanted to catch a fish back in 1941 it was all very easy. All you needed was a 0ft. garden cane. From the local pram shop in the high street, one would buy a cardboard winder containing line, float and hook. That com pleted the tackle. From the garden, we would
dig a few worms. Today it is
different. Most children wanting to start angling feel they must have the latest fishing tackle on
the market — carbon poles, pairs of matching carp rods, bait runnel* reels, electronic bite alarms and a host of accessories. Tackle costing in many cases
several hundred pounds, perhaps even a couple of thousand pounds. It is not needed. A lot of tackle in the shops is there to catch the angler and not the fish. For around £100, you can equip yourself with enough
tackle to become a coarse, game or sea angler. This week we will look at getting started in coarse angling. That’s fish without an adipose fin such as roach, rudd, carp, pike, tench, bream, chub, barbel etc. We anglers in the Kibble Valley are very fortunate in having the River Kibble on our doorstep. The river’s chub fish ing is one of the best in the country, with the chance of catching a 51b. fish. Last year, many anglers trav elled from the Southern Counties to fish our local river. One American angler from Oregon paid £1,660 in a charity auction for leger bread crust to chub. A good all-round rod should be about 11 feet in

Hooks in my opinion are the most important item of tackle and we in Britain make the best. Partridge of Kedditch make the Jack Hilton barbless hook in sizes four to 10. You will need a few of each. One other item of tackle needed is a landing net ami this will eost around £20. Floats come in all shapes and sizes. Noth ing beats a bird quill float and they are easy to make. Just shave all the feather from the quill, then paint the top half an inch — I like a reel tipped quill — then give the float a coat of varnish. What you do not need is a keepnet. We are more

If it is a big fish then it is weighed in a soft muslin bag, quickly photographed and released. Finally, you must have a rod fishing licence and per mission (o fish the venue of vour choice.
