UNNERS defied sweltering conditions to compete in the annual Whalley Nab Race
on Friday. Starting at Church Lane and finish ing atWhalley Methodist Church, the race attracted more than 100 athletes — the best entry since the race was revived on a new course three years ago. Senior runners (pictured above) vied
for glory over a seven-mile course which involved a 1,000 feet ascent, while the inaugural junior race was over a distance of 2.1 miles.
to victory in a record time of 40.40, Simon Thompson (Clayton) was run ner-up in 41.11 and third-placed Gary Wilkinson (Clayton) was the first local across the line in 42.35. The unattached Stephen Butter- worth (48.59) was first veteran home in seventh place, Clayton’s Vanessa Peacock clocked a record 50.22 to fin ish first lady veteran in 17th place, and Debbie Gowans (Accrington. Road Runners) crossed the line in 50.22 to finish 22nd overall and take the second lady veteran prize. Unattached runner Ben Western won
