Clitheroe RIJFC

Second half storm wins the day

Chorley 15, C lith e ro e 17

A MASSIVE second half performance from the town’s rugby team saw them claw back a 15-point deficit to snatch victory in injury time. Ever anxious not to endure a repeat of last season’s reverse at the hands of Chorley men, Clitheroe were forced into several changes due to unavailabilities. Fortunately, there seems to be developing some strength

in depth, so the replacements were able to be selected from a strong squad.

Clitheroe were put under some intense early pressure and appeared to be holding out well until a penalty was con ceded followed quickly by a converted try. Even before Clitheroe could draw breath, Chorley had scored another. But, as the half drew on, Clitheroe became stronger and stronger and were looking the better bet by halftime, despite the scoreline.

ber Thomber slotted in at prop. Against the wind and a slight slope in the first period,

Littlemoor side went in search of the winner. They were slightly diverted after losing Dave Tattersall with a shoul der injury, but Dale Cox was an admirable replacement. With the clock winding down, a weaving run from centre

in the defence as Steve Greatorex was up to challenge and, as the ball squirted loose, Mick Stott was on hand for the touch-down. Now with the bit well and truly between their teeth, the

Ian Fielding brought him to within inches of the line — the movement seemed to have died, when skipper Mike Francis popped up to take the pass and score under the post to level the scores. Heanan coolly converted to seal the victory in what was

the final league fixture of this campaign. A well-deserved win for Clitheroe, who never let their heads drop when they were up against it and creditably

had the self-belief to secure the victory. Team: Burrill, Stott, Greatorex, Fielding, Moorby, Heanan,

Barnes, Thornber, Tattersall, Francis, Proctor, Wrigley, Newton, Holmes, Green, rep. Cox.

On Saturday, Clitheroe entertain Littlcborough at Littlemoor (kick-off 2-30 p.m.).
