A H U N of three successive defeats was halted on Saturday at M aine Road, but Blackburn R o ve rs a lm o st escaped w ith their second away win of the sea
son. I t had looked like Alan Shearer’s
fourth league goal away from Ewood Park this season was going to be enough against resurgent Manches ter City. His goal, just before the hour, flew in
off the inside of the post, leaving Eike Immel bemused, and looked like being the winner until Steve Lomas climaxed a rousing City recovery with a header five minutes
from time. Bit-part player Matty Holmes had
a rare start with Stuart Ripley and
Jason Wilcox again missing, and he took advantage, emerging, along with former Blues star Colin Hendry, with credit after a fine performance. City had seen Uwe Rosier denied by
the post and Tim Flowers before the equaliser, and Rosier could have stolen the points for City after another moment of genius from little Georgi Kinkladze. But Rovers stopped the rot after
defeats a t the hands of title chal lengers Manchester United, Liver
pool and Aston Villa. Not many sides have bettered those three sides this season, and with that difficult set of fixtures behind them, Rovers can now look to mount a charge into Europe — starting with Saturday’s home game with strug gling Wimbledon. The Dons are without a win in three
previous Premiership meetings at Ewood, Rovers taking seven points from nine, although the Crazy Gang are always capable of scoring goals against anyone — even if they con cede morel - Only Newcastle, Manchester Unit
ed, Liverpool, Everton and Black burn have scored more than the Dons this season, but only Bolton have conceded more. Rovers will be hoping to climb the
table, with several sides above them in FA Cup action over the weekend, and get back to the sort of devastat ing form they showed during Decem ber and January. The side are still without the ser
vices of Graeme Le Saux, Ian Pearce and Chris Sutton, and more recently Ripley and the unfortunate Wilcox. But nevertheless, Rovers should still
prove to be more than adequately prepared to deal with Joe Kinnear’s
side. At Turf Moor, things go from bad to

worse. From being in a play-off slot five weeks ago, a word has crept into the Burnley vocabulary that didn't look
like appearing this season— REL E
GATION. One point and three goals in seven
games have seen the Clarets slump to within seven points of the bottom four, and 11 points off the quickly- disappearing play-off places. Burnley have games in hand on
most of the sides above them, but their fixture schedule is extremely
daunting. The Clarets face 13 of the 15 sides
above them in the table before the
end of the season. However, one can see what a new
face can do to a club. You only have to look at Swansea, still in the midst of a relegation fight, but clinging on to hope now that pass-master Jan Molby has taken over the reins. Burnley fans are hoping for some
thing similar with the new manager, who by may wel have been named
before today. Clive Middlemass reiterated at the
weekend that the job won’t be done overnight, and that the club needs
rebuilding. But something needs to be done to
halt the freefall the club has been in for over 12 months. Saturday’s 1-0 Turf Moor defeat at
the hands of local rivals Blackpool was hard to swallow in th a t the Clarets were unfortunate not to take a point from the game. In a very dour clash, neither side
created many chances, and the goal that settled the issue was a very for tuitous strike from old foe Andy Preece, playing with 80% sight and in his manager’s bootst Preece had earlier tested Wayne
Russell with a close-range header, while at the other end, Kurt Nogan — he has netted just two goals in his last 10 games— smashed a shot just
over. .Liam Robinson clipped the bar as the Clarets looked capable of taking the upper hand, but once the Seasiders edged in front on the hour, their iron curtain defence held firm. Burnley face a tough task on Satur
day when they travel to Bristol City in 10th place, looking to improve on the point they earned a t Ashton Gate last season. Hopefully the £ame will hold more
thrills than the goalless December encounter between the sides.' • Burnley Veterans will take on
Blackburn Rovers Veterans on Sun day, March 17th, a t Accrington Stanley’s Crown Ground in a game in aid of the British Olympic Appeal. Tickets are available from local
branches of J JB Sports, the Marsden Building Society and Midland Bank among other outlets, priced £5 for families, £ 2 for adults and £1 for concessions. The game kicks off at 1-30 p.m.
