The name of brave sports campaigner Doreen Euinton will live on at Roefield Leisure Centre — the showpiece sports complex she, above
anyone else, helped to create. ------------------------------------------- Members of the Rotary Club of Ribblesdale nomin ated her for their move ment’s highest honour, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, but she died last year before they could present it to her. How ev e r , only days
before she passed away, R tn R o g e r t H i r s t informed her about the award and, on the day of her funeral in October, president Mr Brian Haig presented it to her family. Her relatives, in turn,
decided to present the award to Roefield and the Rotary Club arranged an unveiling ceremony by Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Stephen Holt. The framed certificate
and medal have .been mounted on the wall in the foyer, so that visitors to the centre for generations to come may know of her lifetime’s work for the local sports scene. The inscription says
that “the award was made on behalf of a grateful community by the Rotary Club of Ribblesdale in remembrance of an inde fatigable fighter, without whose efforts this sports centre would not exist”. Mrs Euinton, of Ribb
lesdale View, Chatburn, who was wheelchair-bound with osteo-arthritis during
the latter part of her life, had been a founder mem ber of the Ribble Valley Sports and Recreation Council, which battled long and hard over many years for a purpose-built shorts centre for the Rib-
ness, £500,000 fund-raising, which resulted in the opening of the privately- run centre in 1991. “This sporting complex a fitting trib
s Valley. Despite her ill- ss, she spearheaded the
wonderful Tady,” said Mr
H a ig at the unveiling ceremony. O u r p ic tu re sh ow s

Fright — but this beetle turns out to be harmless
AN ugly discovery on the banks of the River Ribble led to fears that the area was about to be invaded by the crop-ravaging
Colorado beetle. Whilst enjoying a
picnic during the recent spelj of hot weather,
Billington teenager Paul Keirby (15) found a large, strange-Iooking insect in the reeds growing by the water’s edge. Paul’s mother, Mrs
Lily Keirby, of Billington Gardens, explains: “We didn’t know what it was; I have never seen anything like it before. I wondered whether it might be a Colorado beetle, so we caught it in a plastic con-
tainer and took it to Clitheroe police station.” However, thankfully,
it turned out to be a false
alarm, as the large, salmon-coloured creepy-crawly was finally
identified as a harmless cockchafer beetle, a type
of insect that commonly lives in trees. Mrs Keirby said:
“When we saw the poster warning people to be on their guard against Colorado beetles, we realised that our beetle was quite different. The next day, we received a telephone call from the police confirming that our feairs had been groundless, as our friend was not an illegal immigrant after all!” Colorado beetles have
a distinctive appearance, being around half an
inch long. They are predominantly yellow with black stripes.
Anyone who suspects
that they have found one should inform either the local police or the Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries nnd Food. Our picture shows the
cockchafer, whose size and appearance might give someone a needless fright, although it is nothing more than a harmless member of our local wildlife population.

sented a guide to the Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Dorothy Pearson, after which they sold copies to shoppers.
• The guide has been put together by 12-year-olds,^ for 12-year-olds and it is their own idea. On visits to other areas, the schoolchildren have to buy guides from a national series and they thought that they could produce their own. The new Clitheroe tourist guide is now on sale at
outlets in the town, including the railway station, Cowgill’s, the library and the tourist information
centre. Anyone else interested in selling the booklet should contact the college or Mr Keith Taylor at the Station Gallery (tel: 01200 443800). Coun. Pearson is pictured accepting her issue of the new guide from the eight Oakhill children. -
