Scaling the heights for a teen charity

SCALING four of the British Isles’ highest peaks in only 48 hours has left Clitheroe athlete Nick Millward exhausted but jus

tifiably proud of his achievement. Nick (43), of Railway View, was the

oldest member of the Pendle Harriers, four-man team which has just fin

ished seventh out of the 30 teams which took part in the Vauxhall Four

Peaks Challenge. Sponsored by Clitheroe Motors, the

team of runners, climbers and drivers set off to conquer Ben Nevis last

Thursday. Near perfect conditions meant that

ishing schedule has included regular runs to the top of Pendle Hill and, two weeks before the event, they com pleted Yorkshire’s three peaks in under six hours. As well as achieving a personal tri umph, the team’s effort has raised £3,200 in aid of the Wooden Spoon Society, which will help to pay for a special cancer unit for teenagers at St James’s Hospital, Leeds. This is the fifth time that this annual

event has taken place, but it was the first time for Nick, who admits that

they completed the feat in an incredible time of just two hours and 44 minutes. Next, they tackled Scafell and Snow

don, finishing with the awesome Irish peak of Carountihill.

Handford, Simon Finimore and Dave Ellis, have been in training for the challenge since Christmas. Their pun

the clues,- the gun and a sword with a medieval design, had been handed in to the Abbey’s staff by bemused visitors, as Mrs Jean Cross, the group’s I treasurer explained: “We came to the Abbey to hide the clues in the morning and were told that, as they were so well hidden, they would be-safe until the barbecue.
