Stonyhurst pair retain trophy

S T O N Y H U R S T P a rk G olf Club pairing Paul

McGuire and Jim Tierney retained the Inter Club Challenge Trophy for the

second yeart when they d e fe a te d R o g e r H a r greaves and Ken Ward, from C l ith e ro e G o l f Club. The competition, played in

the format of four-ball match- play, is a UG-hole competition Hayed on both Clitheroe and ’ tonyhurst Park Golf Clubs. After the first 18 holes of

s

closely contested golf played at Clitheroe, McGuire and Tierney finished one up, and they were confident of holding on to the trophy with the second 18 holes to be played on their home course. A f t e r 27 holes o f g o l f ,

McGuire and Tierney were still one up but it was at this stage that the match changed dramatically, as a visibly tir ing Ken Ward found it very

difficult to find the fairways and was constantly having to

play from the deep rough. This put extra pressure on

his p a r tn e r R o g e r H a r greaves, who, despite having

a steady round could find no answer to the long drives of McGuire and the precise chip

ping and putting of Tierney. I t came as no surprise

therefore when the Stony hurst pair forged ahead to three up with three left to

play. The match was finally won

on the 17th hole when Tierney finished with a birdie while

the Clitheroe pair both went into the deep rough from their tee shots.

Mr Barry Bolton from Ston yhurst Golf Club presented

the trophy to McGuire and

Tierney. Mr Bolton also presented

Ken Wai-d with a presentation box o f monogrammed g o l f balls for his efforts over the two days of competition. • Winners of the ladies invi tation greensome was Mrs J. Rhodes/Mrs J. Birtwistle (79- 10-69). 2nd — Mrs M. Red- path/Mrs J. Howarth (98-28.2- 99.8), Mrs D. Dady/Mrs S. Jarrett (83-12.4-70.0), 4th — Mrs M. Holding/Mrs E. Bow den (93-22.2-70.8). • Th e E L L G A Handicap Shield final, held at Rossen- dale Golf Club on June 20th, was won by the the Clitheroe Golf Club ladies team consist ing o f Mrs D. Hamer (71 nett), MrsJ. Rhodes (70), Mrs D. Dady (70), Mrs M. Red- path (77). • P e te r S treet totalled 40 points to win the singles Sta- bleford staged at Clitheroe GC. Harley Preston (39) fin ished runner-up after a card play-off with Peter Chanter, and Peter Harrison (38) fin ished fourth on the countback from Ken Holding, Tom Nut ter and Harry Richardson. • The inaugural invitation mixed greensome attracted 0-1 couples to Clitheroe GC, Jean Holt and Anthony Hutchison

(Diversion) returning 81-15.5- 05.5 to win on the card. Paul Burrows and Jean

Burrows (Whalley) claimed second prize with 78-12.5-05.5 and Edith Child and son Michael Child (Stonyhurst) were third with 81-1O.5-05.5.

The combined efforts of Bill Tattersall and Wilpshire’s J.

Iverson (84-17.5-00.5) gave them fourth prize on the card from Marion Read and Lan-

c a s t e r ’ s B i l l C o u p e (82-15.5-00.5).
