Tough win for chessmen brings year to a close

TH E Clitheroc Chess Club’s A team completed its 19LM fixtures with

a home game against Blackburn B. The first game of the season was against Blackburn C and ended in a draw so, on

paper at least, Clitheroc hail its work cut out if it was to gain anything from the fixture. The first game to finish

was on board four, when Brendan Brown and his opponent reached a posi tion o f equal pawns and opposite-coloured bishops. This is regarded as a draw in theory and was agreed

in practice. Peter Rvan also agreed

a draw with his board five opponent, keeping the

sides level. On board two, John

Smith had e x c e 11 e n t chances for an attacking sacrifice, but in attempt ing to manoeuvre into an even better position he made mistakes and lost after a superb run of six consecutive wins. Brian Carr won material i board three and deve

loped an overwhelming position, ill which his

opponent was forced to resign, bringing the teams level ngnin. Tlie last game to finish

was on board one, where Eric Mansfield played some steady defensive chess with the blnck pieces, but eventually went a pawn down. However, his strong

central pawns were able to exert enough pressure to regain the material and free an advantage at the final time control. Adjudi- cation of the position was decided in favour of Clitli- eroe, giving the home team a 3-2 win.

The first game of 1995

for both Clitheroe A and Clitheroc B is on January 10th, when the teams face each other!
