New champions of floodlit bowls

WHEN the upset o f the championship was digested and it was realised that world crown green howling number one Brian Duncan and his partner, Norman Fletcher, would not be contesting the final, the large crowd settled down to enjoy the rest o f the excellent bowling.

The champions o f the past two years, with

a record o f 21 undefeated games to their name, were put out o f Kibblcsdalc Wan

derers’ Floodlit Doubles on Saturday at the quarter final stage. Gavin Parker and Mar tin Gilpin beat them 21-15 after the cham pions had put up a spirited comeback. Gavin and Martin went on to heat Simon

and G eo ff Coupe 21-19 in the semi-final and so took their place in the final. In the other half o f the draw Alan Shak-

lady and Gerald Gregson coasted through the quurter and semi-final stages in com parison to the ir epic f irs t match o f the night.

THE three pronged attack of Mark Heys, Jon Penman and Ian Pilkington wreaked devil ish havoc among the Eas twood Hanley defence and scored f iv e goals between them to destroy the Potteries’ side. A superb hat-trick from Heys

was supported bv two from Penman and one from Pilkinjj- ton, who is quickly making his mark since nis transfer from Humber Bridge. The Blues now lie comfortably

in second place in the Carling North West Counties Division One, with games in hand on those both above and below them. Eastwood set off well, Clith

eroe being the slower of the two sides. But when the Blues got into their stride they produced

chance after clear-cut chance, doing just what their managers wanted them to. “After creating very little in

front of goal on Wednesday it was important for us to get back to scoring ways, particularly as three points could put us into second place, and the l>oys did exactly what we asked of them,” said Denis Underwood after the match.

Penman opened the scoring on

28 minutes. Lee Sculpher crossed from the right and the big forward headed home. The visitors came straight

back and forced Dave Whallev to save from a definite goaf- bound effort. But it was Clitheroe who

were the next scorers, increas ing their lead just before the half-time whistle. Gary Butcher found Heys with a pinpoint cross and a second header found the back of the visitor’s net.

Tennent’s Floodlit Trophy Clitheroe’s cup of woe Penrith 1, Clitheroe 1

A RUN of dreadful cup luck continued for Clitheroe when they visited Penrith for the first round second leg of the league’s Floodlit Trophy last Wednesday. Even though the side man

aged a creditable 1-1 draw with a team who are steadilv climb ing the league table, they still found themselves dumped out of the competition at the first hur dle on account of their 2-1 home defeat in the first leg two weeks ago.

Clitheroe played reasonably

well on a horrible night. The rain (xiured and jioured from the start to the finish of the* game, making it slippy under foot. But the biggest complaint the management team o f Gary

Butcher and Denis Underwood had was that their team did not amount of chances

A quick long bail clearance

found the former Carlisle man in snace. He turned well and chipped Dave Whallev from all of ao yards. Two goals in arrears on the

aggregate score, Clitheroe now turned up the heat. Andy Taylor replaced Andv

Rouine and, when fullback Damian Burch was injured and fo rw a rd Dominic McT ea r entered the game, Clitheroe had *o re-shuffle their players. Both substitutes came close to

scoring with headers before McTear equalised for the Shaw bridge side when he connected with a cross from the right. But good defending kept out

Time on their side

C h a t bu rn I , C h a t burn Veterans I

TH E former players o f Chatburn FC had time on their

side when they took on their yotmger protegees in a char ity football match on Sunday. With most of them around 2<i years older than their oppo

nents, they could claim to be a more experienced outfit. And at •t :{ down, referee Ron Rirch — a 50-year-old himself — played 15 minutes injury time to allow the veterans opjmrtunitv to equidise. This duly came when the youngsters ran out of patience and

scored an own goal to end the maten! In the game, which hcljn-d to raise money for tin* village bon

fire, the younger and fitter men utiened up an early 3-0 lead. Paul Held, Mike Landers ami Stephen Booth, who outwitted

his father, Rainey,in a deft movement, all scored. The ancient regime had two one-time Clitheroe FC first-teamers

addition of a player to the oldies, the flow of the game changed. Philip Hodgson was presented with more than a few goal-scor

ing chances for the veterans, but had a mid-life crisis when he found the goal too small a target. It was left to Paul Bretherton and Andy King — the second

Clitheroe ringer. allieil mu- appearance as substitute — to push the scores within one goal. Then referee Birch, valiantly holding out a hand for his gen

eration, conjured up a last-minute jienalty for the veterans. Rodney Booth, eager to make up for his earlier indiscretion,

stepped up to the spot. But the magnitude of the moment affected his hlood pressure ami he shot tamely wide! As the game dragged on. the children of the 50's looked unlikely

to score and referee Birch unlikely to blow up, a moment of real altruism came. Paul English, sensing the plight of the old men, tapjjcd home an

own goal and allowed them to leave the field to take a joint-easing bath and with a pride-saving draw.

Clitheroe kept the pressure

on from the start. About 15 minutes into the first half, Caro lyn Taylor took the ball down tlie wing, passed to Ruth Tal bot, who slipped the ball to Anna Hollingworth, and the first goal was made. In the second half, Clitheroe kept on the attack and the

goal home. Clitheroe goalie Amanda Crndnell played well, saving all the shots that were on target. Carolyn Taylor hit home the

final goal after a great run by Ruth Talbot from the back. The team gelled well and the victory was a job well done. Clitheroe: Tavlor, Barker, Hollingworth, Hill, Taylor,

running them close, while at the other end of the table the Coach and Horses Rejects might be

in a false position. All their games have been lost

by a single frame and it is only a matter of time before they will start winning. Results: Coronation A 2.

Villagers’ gruesome ordeal

Oswaldtwistle Town 7, Chat burn 2

T H E stench o f a n ea rby

slaughterhouse hung over the Great Harwood ground in C h a t b u r n ’ s g a m e w i t h Oswaldtwistle Town, giving o f f a distasteful smell for the duration of the match.

But it was the rotting, dis

membered corpse of the village team which was not a pretty sight as it fell to yet another heavy defeat.

Chatburn were stunned in the

first 10 minutes, when the 10 men of Oswaldtwistle broke out of defence twice ami shot them selves into a 2-0 lead.

When their 11th man entered

the fray and a third goal was scored, Chatburn heads began

to fall. The fourth Ossy goal came

before the interval and a fifth after the re-start.

Chatburn liegan to get their

game together and they added a bit of pride to their game when Brendan Gallagher came on as substitute.

He scored immediately and although the home team fired

another one, Tony Bush rifled in a second for the villagers. Oswaldtwistle had the final

say, however, when they shot home a seventh and sent Chat burn home on the end of a grue some ordeal.

Chatburn: Hall, Pritchard,

Robinson, Boyd, Lewis, Hart ley, Heanan, Bush. Gardner, Leonard, Lawson. Subs: Gal lagher, Bibby.

5-a-side

Close-fought encounter

THE winners o f the inaugural NJB Sports 5-a-side football league, Flexible Milan, com pleted the double by winning a gruelling cup competition.

Seven teams competed in a

two league round robin tourna ment at Roefield Leisure Centre and, after three hours of fast and furious five-a-side football, mighty Milan met the league's runners-up, Low Moor, in the final.

In a close-fought encounter,

which was worthy of a grand finale, Milan sneaked ahead early on. And with some stout defending, which belied their name, they hung on to win by 3-1.

Manager Mark Plant collected

the winners’ shield and, along with the league championship trophy, it is now on show at the team sponsor’s reception area — Flexible Reinforcements Ltd.

S u p e r Tool Stunning debut

M A K IN G his debut in the town’s A team, Carl Hackett put in a stunning display of j>ool to win at league leaders liurnley.

His opponent was bemused

and dismayed as the De Lacy man beat him emphatically, leaving him with all seven balls on the table.

But C l ith e ro e ’s hopes of

reaching the national finals in Gt Yarmouth next March dipped, as Carl's win was only one of two frames won by Clitheroe in what turned out to be a 7-2 thrashing.

After the first three frames

Clitheroe were unlucky not to be ahead.

Steve Hnrsfield went in-off

the black. losing the first frame. Dave Parkinson levelled with an impressive display, but Chris Steele also went in-off with just two halls remaining on the table.

In the next three frames,

however. Clitheroe men Andy Sudwnrth. Peter MeQuade ami Tony Clough were beaten

emphatically. At 5-1, Burnlev had won the

match, but Hackett produced

his piece of magic to reduce the arrears and take the man-of- the-match awanl.

John BirU-ck ami Roger Hope

lost the final two frames. With two home matches left.

Clitheroe must win by wide margins to stand any chance of a

trip to Gt Yarmouth. , Sue Seddon lost (4*9, 6-9, , George Senior won (9-0, 9-4, DISTRIBUTION manager for Bar-be-Quick, Mark Graham
