THE world o f martial arts has its roots in the Orient but the sport has flung its seeds far and wide.


Medals galore for brothers


A variety ot codes now flourish in Clitheroe and two broth­


ers have made the practice o f one, ju-jitsu, their very own! Konrad and Michael Bisping, of Henthorn Close, have been


winning national ju-jitsu medals for a number o f years. And on Sunday they were doing it again.


In the sport ju-jitsu grand prix at the British Champion­


ships, in Nottingham, they came away, again, with a clutch of medals.


Konrad (18), who is training to join the Queen’s Lancashire


Regiment in the army, has been practising the sport for just over 12 months. In the open class on Sunday he won the silver medal, losing a close encounter 3-2 to the current world champion. h iftcen year-old Michael, who has been in the sport for five


years, claimed two gold medals and one silver. A fte r entering and winning the under-l(i event he then


claimed gold in the senior middleweight (under 79 kilo) before entering the light heavyweight category — in which he was lighting men much heavier than himself— and won the silver medal.


The A ear 11 pupil, from St Augustine's, is an experienced


competitor and his accolades already include representing Oreat Britain at the World Ko-Budo (known in Britain as ju­


jitsu) Symposium in Canada, earlier this year. again he has won his way into the national squad, which will take part in the Symposium in Switzerland in May 1995.

disaster struck for Green when an innocuous cross was not cleared and the ball was planted home from six vards. The goal jolted the visitors,


but with the wrong effect. Hurst Green lapsed into com­


placency and they were soon two goals down. Another cross found its way past four defend­ ers and a Canberra forward made no mistake. Before half-time Green began


to step up their game, though the exper ienced Canberra defence were making it hard for them to c r e a te c le a r -cu t chances. Then, with minutes of the half


left, village sweeper Lindsey Blackledgo pushed forward and scored with a rasping shot from 25 yards. Hurst Green tried valiantly to
