AS a visionary, V ic k y Lee C a r
t e r LEE GARTER^ i s
awe-inspiring. As person, she possesses an intoxicating vitality and enthusiasm. Consequently, it is hardly
surprising that her expanding health studio continues to be such a success. Ten years ago, when she opened a small
gymnasium tucked away in the centre of Clitheroc, it was revolutionary. Private health clubs were in their infancy and Vicky saw the potential. Today, her “small gym” has grown and grown. It is
home to a staff of 30 and a membership touching 320. If ever there was a candidate deserving the accolade of
North West Businesswoman of the year, Vicky Lee Carter must be that person. Her vision was and is the creation of a health haven for
Ribble Valley residents, in the centre of town — ultimately with the addition of a hotel fronting Castlegate! A few years ago, it seemed possible that burgeoning success
might have led to the studio searching for an alternative site. Fortunately, Vicky suddenly found herself with an opportunity
to buy land to the front and, following the sad death of local businessman Mr Peter Field, the shop at the back, fronting on Castlegate, many years ago a coaching house. It was a rare opportunity and has since led to further expansion. With a luxuriously equipped gymnasium, newly expanded dance
studio, sauna, shower room, sunbed suite, beauty therapy studio, leisure wear shop, herbalists, cosmetics counter and associated facilities, Vicky had a chance to add something she had been considering for years — a swimming pool and hair salon. The latter has just opened. Work on the second phase begins in the spring. By
September, the Lee Carter Health Studio will possess a beautifully designed pool, two-thirds the size of Ribblesdale Pool and the biggest installed by the contractor at a private health club in the north. A second gymnasium will be included, with additional
machines and a small cafe-bar area, all open seven days and nights a week. We are, she says wisely, a service industry and we
should strive to be of service. The studio is an oasis in the town centre. Age is certainly no barrier. The oldest person attending
regularly is a man of 82! Sessions are tailor-made for the individual. Vicky and
her staff will talk to you about your hopes and aims and then, bearing in mind any medical problems or special requirements, devise sessions just for you.
“Everyone is different,” she says. “Eight out of 10
people have a back problem. One out of 20 can actually do everything in the gym. Ideally you should do, something that gets you out of breath for 20 minutes
twice a week.” And for people concerned about doing too much, there
is a wealth of experience to draw on, with osteopaths, physiotherapists, chiropody — even a doctor doing acupuncture.
Currently, the club has 320 fit, happy, health-conscious
members. There are just 20 to 30 vacancies. That alone speaks volumes! Membership is £235 a year.
Alternatively, clients can feel free to enrol for
individual sessions, from bums and turns in the dance classes to jazz, tap and aerobics at £3 per class or £42 per term.
It's well en route to becoming a one-stop health shop, so call in today and see for yourself.

To Vicky this ^ a s , an obvious next step. The health’ sforefib-staff already caters for weddirigST“With make-up, beauty therapy and fitness routines. Hair was the next stage.
Better still, among the club members were several mobile hairdressers, who enjoy their work but occasionally find that they could utilise the extras offered in the salon — the backwash, the heat unit,
special mirrors and chairs. They all offer a one-to-one extremely personal service
to their clients. Vicky hopes it will be possible to repeat that winning formula within the privacy of the
salon, with each client having exclusive use of the hi-tec and luxuriously equipped facility with his or her personal
hairdresser It sounds an exciting concept. Read on. For Vicky has
taken it a stage further and talked to club members and customers and, as a result, is introducing seven eminently
professional stylists. They are:
Sarah Hargreaves — Monday all day and evening. Saturdays
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sarah is well known in the area, used to be in Clitheroe and now
runs a successful business in Barrowford. She specialises in bobs,
re-styles and colouring. Samantha Bailey — Tuesday all day. Sam is a busy mobile hairdresser. She is a great stylist.
She loves cutting, colouring and special occasion work.
Elaine Hirst — Wednesday 2.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. Elaine (nee Macmillan) is the senior stylist with
Richard Graczowksi. A superb cutter and stylist, she loves to perm and work with long hair.
Sharon Rawson — 9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Sharon is well known in the area. She is another first
class stylist, big on ideas and special occasion work. Kathryn Brown — Thursday all day, Friday all day
and evening. Kathryn was Vidal Sasoon's number one colour
technician. She comes with a wealth of experience in all aspects of hairstyling. She specialises in foil highlights, perms and colour.
Edward Worswick — Thursday 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Clitheroe's barber! Lucky to get this one — if only for
an hour and a half. Definitely a first class barber with first class jokes!
Sebastian John — Sundays all day. His reputation speaks for itself. A stylist with many
followers in Clitheroe, the studio managed to tempt him! The salon is certainly worth a visit, with the latest in
equipment and customer comfort, all dominated by an eye-catching and exclusive iron design salon unit made', by Vicky's husband, Chris, at Trapp Forge, Simonstone. Prices are very reasonable, starting from £8 for women
and £5.50 for men. There is a 10% discount for health studio members and a special opening offer of a free conditioning treatment to the value of £6 with all appointments booked during the first month. Consultations are free. Lavish a little luxury on yourself and give Free Style a call on 24475/24472.
