I CAN sympathise w i th the mother whose son has not been given a place a t the second
ary school of his choice.' Maybe the parents a t Clitheroe Royal Grammar
School should now feel a little guilty at voting for “opting out” a few years ago.
Although there are financial benefits for the school , ,
in opting out, there are also disadvantages for the community. Now th a t the 11-plus examination is not taken as a matter of course for Ribble Valley children, parents must enter their children for the CRGS entrance examination. Some parents do not take up this option, many more than with the 11-plus
svstem . Can we blame CRGS if it takes the most capable
children who enter and pass, wherever they reside. This leaves many more children competing for places • a t the two other Ribble Valley secondary schools (excluding St Augustine’s RC). Parents from out of the Ribble Valley are pre
pared to pay travelling expenses for their children to attend a secondary school in the Ribble Valley because i t is the school that they prefer. Should their children be excluded entry to accom
modate children who really had no desire to go to Ribblesdale, for example, as f irs t choice, but
only wish to go as second'best and it .is closer to home? Maybe the Ribble Valley planners should con
sider the problem of school places when considering applications for building developments. There has been extensive house building taking place in the Ribble Valley over the past few years.
Now some of the larger village primary schools are
full to capacity. Will primary school children have to be taken by bus to a school with places? AH these extra children will need school places at the age of 11. Where will they go?
