ALLEGATIONS of poor workmanship comprise a third of the complaints han-
died by the country’s fourth emergency service — and claims of over-churjpnjj make up a further 15%. The AA is calling for changes in the
law to protect motorists from faulty workmanship and over-charging at
garages. Its legal and technical services dea-
partment carried out a survey of 1,400 complaints from AA members, and the main concerns for motorists were faulty r e p a i r s , se c o n d - ra te sev ic in g and
over-charging. The survey excluded complaints con
nected purely with the purchase of a vehicle, but other grievances include warranty problems, faulty spai’e parts, delays in repair work, unjustified MOl test failures and unauthorised garage
work.
“The huge majority of garages do a good job a t a reasonable price,” says Mike Watkins,
